In 2023, with non-refundable funding from Denmark’s Danida Green Business Partnerships programme, the World Wide Fund for Nature in Viet Nam, or WWF-Viet Nam, launched the project “Ecological Coffee Production and Natural Forest Improvement in Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province”. The project is now being implemented in Huong Phung, Khe Sanh, Tan Lap and neighboring communes, with a total investment of nearly 30 billion Vietnamese dong.
Under the project, farmers are encouraged to avoid chemical fertilizers and harmful pesticides. Coffee husks and other by-products are composted into organic microbial fertilizer and returned to the plantations.
Slow Viet Nam Co., Ltd. is working alongside farmers to develop supply chains, purchase their coffee and support the export of high-quality Arabica beans.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, Doa Cu Hamlet, Huong Phung Commune, Quang Tri Province
"Without shade trees, coffee yields were unpredictable. In good years, production reached 15 to 17 tonnes per hectare, but in poor years it dropped to only 7 to 10 tonnes. With shade trees, yields are much more stable. Even in difficult years, my farm produces around 18 tonnes, and in good years, 20 to 22 tonnes. The coffee cherries are fuller and ripen better under shade, allowing us to sell them at higher prices. Without shade trees, the cherries are often damaged by the sun and can only be sold as lower-grade coffee."

The project has contributed to economic development while supporting natural forest conservation and restoration. Coffee growers have gradually changed their perceptions and farming practices. This transformation is helping coffee produced in Huong Phung, Khe Sanh and Tan Lap maintain its reputation as a specialty coffee and strengthen its position in international markets.

Mr. Pham Song Toan, Head of the But Viet Coffee Group, Huong Phung Commune, Quang Tri Province
"Farmers have come to recognize the benefits of growing coffee under forest canopies. The model improves productivity and delivers more stable yields from year to year. As a result, more farmers are choosing to plant shade trees."

Huong Phung Commune is home to nearly 3,000 hectares of coffee, accounting for around 60 to 70 percent of the former Huong Hoa District’s coffee-growing area. So far, 600 households have joined or registered to join the Ecological Coffee Production and Natural Forest Improvement Project, covering nearly 100 hectares of coffee plantations.
The project aims to convert 2,500 hectares of monoculture Arabica coffee plantations into agroforestry systems, while protecting 18,000 hectares of natural forest. It also seeks to support 2,000 smallholder farmers - most of them from the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic minority community - in developing sustainable value chains and increasing household incomes by an average of 40 percent. In addition, the project targets the processing and export of 1,000 tonnes of high-quality Arabica green coffee beans to international markets.
These practical goals are expected to improve the livelihoods of coffee-growing communities while supporting the long-term sustainable development of Quang Tri Province’s coffee sector.
