To support local authorities in sustainably managing and using water resources, with funding from the German Government, the project “sustainable groundwater management based on geological and hydrogeological conditions in the Mekong Delta and coastal areas of Viet Nam for climate change adaptation” has been implemented by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) in partnership with the National Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation (NAWAPI) during the 2023-2026 period. The project has already delivered important initial results.

A key highlight of the project is the research and implementation of Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) solutions. This innovative approach strikes a balance between groundwater extraction and recharge. Initial pilot models have demonstrated clear effectiveness in increasing groundwater storage, restoring aquifers, and reducing the risks associated with over-extraction. The project has also advanced data management and digital transformation by establishing an integrated platform for monitoring, investigation, and specialized groundwater information.
Mr. Trieu Duc Huy, Deputy Director General, NAWAPI
"The project explored storing freshwater in deep saline aquifers in the Mekong Delta, at depths of around 300 to 500 metres. The results show that these confined aquifers, particularly those with salinity levels of 2–3 grams per litre, have great potential. By injecting freshwater in a controlled manner and storing it for six months to one year, we achieved a freshwater recovery rate of 70–80 percent. This is a very significant and innovative result.
Secondly, the storage capacity and absorption potential of these deep aquifers are enormous. On average, a single well can absorb about 1,000 cubic metres of water per day, representing a substantial storage volume. Based on these outstanding results, the project has developed recommendations for local authorities and groundwater users on controlled groundwater management. This opens up the possibility of storing freshwater in deep saline aquifers for use during the dry season, particularly for irrigation and domestic water supply. Going forward, the project will transfer this technology and expand it across the Mekong Delta, especially in areas such as the Ca Mau Peninsula, where it can become an effective solution."

Prof. Dr. Pham Quy Nhan, Water Resources Expert
"The project's strategy is to recharge groundwater during the rainy season and extract it in the dry season, meaning the stored water is recovered after about six months. During that period, mixing, migration and interactions occur between the recharged water and the native groundwater, as well as with minerals in the surrounding soil and rock formations. Therefore, further research is needed to assess the long-term recovery efficiency. If recharge is carried out over a six-month period, the recovery rate may be somewhat lower than that achieved in earlier experiments. Nevertheless, as a researcher specialising in managed aquifer recharge, I highly value the project's results and believe the approach is both practical and highly feasible."

Mr. Santiago Alonso Rodriguez, First Secretary, German Embassy in Ha Noi
"The project has strengthened the capacity of many local authorities to adopt good groundwater management practices, including improved monitoring, field inspections and data management, as mentioned earlier.
The project has also demonstrated that Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is a technically feasible and cost-effective solution for storing freshwater underground. This technology can help reduce water shortages, improve the sustainability of groundwater use, and contribute to reducing land subsidence at the local level."
