French tourists took pictures of Truong Son muntjac on Bach Ma peak

(VAN) Foreign tourists while visiting Bach Ma National Park came across two rare Truong Son muntjac and took pictures of them.

On the afternoon of March 15, Mr. Nguyen Vu Linh, Director of Bach Ma National Park (Phu Loc district, Thua Thien - Hue province) said that foreign tourists had just taken pictures of two endangered Truong Son muntjac.

The area where these tourists took pictures of Truong Son muntjac species is in front of Phong Lan Hotel (Km18 + 500) on Bach Ma Peak.

Previously, the images of the two above-mentioned individuals posted on social networks received many positive responses, and many people were surprised to learn that this species still exists.

Mr Hoang Nhu Phuong, who posted on social networks, said that the pictures of two Truong Son muntjac individuals taken at Bach Ma were from a French tourist couple.

Late in the afternoon of March 9, this couple went photo hunting on Bach Ma Mountain when they discovered two animals in the swimming pool area in front of Phong Lan Hotel.

Before that, Mr Phuong spent 4 days with a French tourist couple taking photos of brown-shanked douc langurs and grey-shanked douc langurs in Ha Tinh, Quang Nam, and Da Nang.

The Truong Son Muntjac (scientific name Muntiacus truongsonenis) is an ungulate species belonging to the deer family Cervidae, subfamily Muntiacinae, genus Muntiacus.

This is an endangered endemic animal species, discovered in the Truong Son mountain range of Vietnam in 1997. After many years of not being seen, the Truong Son muntjac species seemed to be extinct.

In the mountains of Thua Thien-Hue province, in 2021, researchers discovered Truong Son muntjacs.

In the past 5 years, through biodiversity monitoring activities, Bach Ma National Park has recorded the appearance of this species in many locations through a system of camera traps.

Mr Nguyen Vu Linh added that in addition to Truong Son mangroves, on Bach Ma mountain there are many rare and endangered animal species, such as white pheasants, southern Vietnamese box turtles, impressed tortoises, purple-sided pheasants, pangolin, flying civet, red-shanked douc langur...
