On October 24, at Kim Son commune (Dong Thap province), DNP - Tien River Raw Water Co., Ltd. (a member of DNP Water) held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dong Tam Water Plant raw water pumping station and transmission pipeline system. The project is considered the “first milestone” in developing an inter-regional water supply model in Vietnam, paving the way for a sustainable and long-term solution to the freshwater shortage in the Mekong Delta.

The project’s first phase has a total investment of over VND 1.82 trillion, with a designed capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day and night. It is expected to be completed and put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2026. The system includes main pumping stations and pipelines stretching approximately 115 km, ensuring the transmission of non-saline raw water from the Tien river and Nguyen Tan Thanh canal to clean water plants in Dong Thap, Tay Ninh, and Vinh Long.
Once completed, the project will provide a stable raw water source to meet domestic and production needs for more than two million people, serving key industrial zones and clusters in the region. In its second phase, the capacity will be increased to 600,000 cubic meters per day and night, forming an interconnected freshwater transmission network between provinces along the Tien River.
According to Nguyen Thanh Dieu, Vice Chairman of the Dong Thap People’s Committee, salinity intrusion in the lower reaches of the Tien and Hau rivers has become increasingly severe in recent years, putting great pressure on water sources for daily use and production in coastal provinces.
“The launch of this inter-provincial water supply project is an important preparatory step, carefully studied to respond to climate change and ensure long-term water security,” he said, also noting that the province is investing in salinity prevention sluice systems along the Tien river. They will help close off areas frequently affected by saltwater intrusion and create favorable conditions for the operation of this inter-regional raw water plant.

Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tuong Van highly regarded the project’s strategic significance. “This is not only a major infrastructure work but also a testament to cooperation between the government, businesses, and international partners in achieving green development and climate resilience goals,” he said.
Based on the information from Deputy Minister Nguyen Tuong Van, the construction sector is implementing a strategy for safe and sustainable water supply by 2030, with a vision toward 2050. The main priorities are to develop inter-regional water systems, apply modern technology, and maximize the utilization of social resources. He requested that the project owner ensure steady progress, quality of work, and construction safety while localities accelerate network connections so the project can soon deliver results.
Hoang Minh Hung, Chairman of the Board of DNP Water, pledged to execute the project on schedule with the highest quality and efficiency. “When the first phase is completed in the fourth quarter of 2026, the project will stand as a symbol of collaboration between businesses and government, embodying social responsibility and a vision for sustainable development,” Chairman Hung said.
Alongside the project in Dong Thap, DNP Water is conducting studies in preparation for the Southwest Hau River Raw Water Plant, aiming to deliver freshwater from the upstream areas to Ca Mau as these are the localities most affected by sea-level rise and land subsidence.
Officially established in 2017, DNP Water focuses its resources on realizing DNP Holding's long-term investment commitment to the water and environment industry, not only increasing investment value for shareholders in an industry with much room for growth, but also contributing to solving outstanding problems related to domestic water sources, such as lack of clean water, increasingly polluted water sources. It pioneers the development of water supply solutions in rural areas, islands, and areas affected by climate change.
With its technological capabilities and experience in water infrastructure development, DNP Water is committed to partnering with localities in building a modern, safe, and sustainable water supply network, contributing to the preservation of freshwater resources for the Mekong Delta’s future.
The Dong Tam Water Plant Project not only addresses the freshwater shortage but also opens a new perspective on sustainable infrastructure for the Mekong Delta’s future, aiming to realize the inter-regional vision and green development strategy.
