Da Nang positions fisheries as a key economic sector

Strict control of water environment and breeds

White-leg shrimp farming on sand has been established for many years in Thang Truong commune, Da Nang City. Mr. Tran Thanh Thoi (An Tran hamlet) boldly invested in four ponds on a total area of 5,000 m². Despite production costs being three times higher than traditional earthen ponds, this model has proven highly effective. Under favorable weather conditions, each crop can generate around VND 400 million in profit. To achieve such results, farmers must strictly follow technical processes, from pond preparation and breed selection to water environmental management and disease prevention.

"The most important factor in shrimp farming is water environment, followed by breeds. To achieve high efficiency, I have invested in a settling pond and a wastewater treatment pond to prepare for the next crop," Mr. Thoi shared.

Mr. Thoi is not the only successful farmer. Mr. Nguyen Xuan Can has also achieved remarkable results. With three crops per year, each year, he supplies the market with more than 100 tons of shrimp and earns around VND 3 billion in profit after deducting expenses. Mr. Can affirmed that the water environment is the decisive factor for success or failure; thus, farmers must invest methodically and apply new technology and techniques to minimize risks.

In addition to shrimp farming, integrated farming of black tiger prawn with seabass, rabbitfish, and spotted babylon snails, though less profitable than shrimp farming, also helps many farmers in Thang Truong maintain stable incomes.

According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cam, Head of the Thang Truong Commune Economic Office, the locality currently has more than 268 hectares of aquaculture area, including over 235 hectares of riverbank farming and about 33 hectares of farming on sand. In just the first six months of 2025, the commune’s seafood output reached 2,262 tons, nearly 45% of the annual target.

Early development of an aquaculture project

Not only in Thang Truong, but across Da Nang City, aquaculture has also recorded remarkable growth. According to the Da Nang Department of Agriculture and Environment, by the end of August 2025, the city’s total aquaculture area had reached over 3,110 hectares. Of this, about 1,850 hectares are used for brackish and marine aquaculture (shrimp, crabs, fish, spotted babylon snails, etc.), with white-leg shrimp accounting for 1,480 hectares.

In previous years, spontaneous aquaculture activities on rivers in Nui Thanh, Tam Ky, Duy Xuyen, Dien Ban, and Hoi An grew rapidly, resulting in many risks. This situation has created an urgent need for stricter management and a comprehensive re-planning of the sector.

At the same time, with synchronized planning in place, aquaculture farmers will be required to adopt closed farming processes and comply strictly with planning, while breed input must be tightly controlled in terms of origin and quality.

Mr. Vo Van Long, Director of the Da Nang Sub-Department of Sea, Islands, and Fisheries, said that under the former Quang Nam provincial master plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050, aquaculture development is oriented toward the use of irrigation and hydropower reservoirs, along with the promotion of suitable marine farming models.

"We are currently conducting research and developing a project to rationally plan farming areas, attract investment, and position fisheries as a key economic sector. The ultimate goal is to increase farmers’ incomes, ensure stable livelihoods, and contribute to Da Nang's sustainable socio-economic development," emphasized Mr. Vo Van Long, Director of the Da Nang Sub-Department of Sea, Islands, and Fisheries.
