8 more sarus cranes to transfer to Dong Thap

(VAN) In 2026, Dong Thap is expected to receive 8 more Sarus cranes from Thailand - a vital contribution to the Tram Chim National Park Conservation Project.

The People’s Committee of Dong Thap Province announced that Vice Chairman Huynh Minh Tuan has directed relevant agencies to urgently complete the legal and technical procedures in preparation for receiving 8 additional sarus cranes from Thailand in 2026.

Among them, 2 are adult individuals designated for breeding, marking an important step in the Sarus Crane Conservation Project at Tram Chim National Park for the 2022–2032 period. This event also carries special significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand.

Earlier, in April 2025, Dong Thap received the first Sarus cranes from Thailand to be brought to Tram Chim National Park. The Nakhon Ratchasima Zoological Park Organization (Thailand) has also committed to continuing its support by providing an additional 8 individuals in the near future to help strengthen the population of this rare bird species.

Tram Chim National Park used to be a familiar stopover for Sarus cranes during the dry season. At times, the area recorded more than 1,000 individuals roosting, creating an iconic image of the Dong Thap Muoi wetland region.
