Viet Nam calls for emergency support from international community

(VAN) Timely support from international partners not only helps stabilize lives and restore livelihoods but also strengthens resilience to future disasters.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued Official Telegram No. 15/BCĐ-BNNMT dated October 9, 2025, on providing emergency assistance to localities severely affected by recent natural disasters.

According to the document, during September and October 2025, Viet Nam suffered a series of severe natural disasters, including tropical storms No. 8, 9, 10, and 11, followed by heavy rains and flooding. In particular, Storm No. 10 – with its rapid movement, strong intensity, and wide impact – made landfall in the Nghe An-Ha Tinh area on the night of September 28 and early morning of September 29.

The storm’s circulation caused prolonged heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across the northern and north-central regions. Before floodwaters could fully recede, Storm No. 11 struck again, bringing torrential rain that raised river levels from the North to Ha Tinh to alert levels 2 and 3, surpassing historical flood records in several localities.

According to Viet Nam's Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, as of October 9, natural disasters across the country have left 238 people dead or missing, 367 injured, 258,000 houses damaged or roofed, more than 500,000 hectares of rice, crops and plants flooded. The total estimated damage to date is 33,549 billion VND.

Amid this “storm upon storm, flood upon flood” situation, people in affected regions urgently need international humanitarian assistance. Timely support will help stabilize lives, restore livelihoods, and strengthen resilience against future disasters.

The National Civil Defense Steering Committee has assigned the VDDMA under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment to act as the focal point for coordination, information sharing, and connecting donors with local authorities. International organizations are being called upon to cooperate in delivering emergency relief and post-disaster recovery efforts.
