Training on export-standard vegetable and flower production

(VAN) Key solutions have been updated to improve quality, enhance the supply chain, and meet the stringent requirements of international export markets.

On July 13, 2026, in Lam Vien Ward, Lam Dong Province, the Center for Agricultural Technology Transfer and Progress Research (under the Institute of Agricultural Science for Southern Vietnam) hosted a training course on solutions to improve the efficiency of producing export-standard vegetables and flowers.

According to Mr. Tran Duc Thien, Deputy Director of the Lam Dong Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, by 2025, the province managed 93.800 hectares of vegetables yielding over 2,75 million tons, with high-tech vegetable farming covering 33.574 hectares. On the floriculture front, the cultivation area spanned over 12.500 hectares, producing approximately 4.5 billion stems annually. Currently, the market for Lam Dong's vegetables and flowers remains heavily domestic-focused, with export rates staying below the province's actual potential.

“In addition to traditional markets, Lam Dong aims to expand into potential new destinations in the coming time, including India, while accelerating the application of science, technology, and high-tech practices in production,” Mr. Thien emphasized.

The training program was organized under the Southern Vegetable-Flower-Fruit Innovation Club, a collaborative initiative between the Center for Agricultural Technology Transfer and Progress Research and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) of Australia, funded by the Australian Government's Aus4Innovation program. The event was coordinated alongside the Lam Dong Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, the Dalat Potato, Vegetable, and Flower Research Center, and various sector enterprises.

According to Mr. Ngo Xuan Chinh from the Center for Agricultural Technology Transfer and Progress Research, meeting export standards requires rigorous control across the entire supply chain, spanning raw material zones, harvesting, preliminary processing, preservation, and transport. Beyond implementing VietGAP standards, production facilities must establish growing area codes and packing house codes, implement origin traceability, strictly monitor fertilizer and pesticide usage, and maintain comprehensive production logs.

Mr. Chinh added that modern food safety mandates no longer focus solely on the final product; they encompass production conditions, environmental protection, occupational health, and facility management. Controlling chemical, biological, and physical hazards across the entire cultivation process is crucial to passing import market inspections.

Regarding technical protocols for high-tech floriculture, M.Sc. Tran Anh Thong, Deputy Director of the Dalat Potato, Vegetable, and Flower Research Center, introduced several cutting-edge technologies currently in use. These range from tissue culture for disease-free seedlings and PCR testing for viruses to molecular marker-assisted selection, sensor-managed greenhouses, automated drip irrigation and fertigation systems, integrated pest management (IPM), and post-harvest technologies.

According to M.Sc. Tran Anh Thong, utilizing technology in each phase elevates seedling quality, refines growing conditions, lowers overall production costs, extends post-harvest shelf life, and enhances the market value of flower products.

The training course, running from July 13 to 14, 2026, successfully updated local knowledge, connected value chain stakeholders, and supported Lam Dong’s agricultural sector in progressively aligning with the demands of international markets.
