Sand-field shrimp aquaculture: Success driven by high-tech applications

(VAN) While shrimp farmers in the sand-dune areas of East Gia Lai are increasingly failing due to losses, those farming areas that have adopted high technology are proving highly successful.

Higher revenue, profit, and reduced pollution

According to Pham Thanh Nhan, Head of the Aquaculture Division (under the Gia Lai Fisheries Sub-Department), the price of commercial whiteleg shrimp has remained relatively high since the first aquaculture season in 2025. The current price of shrimp of the 80 count per kilogram size ranges from USD 4.40 to USD 4.80 per kilogram, which has motivated producers to make a significant investment in the second shrimp crop.

Furthermore, Nhan observed that Thanh Ly Co., Ltd. and Ngoc Chau Co., Ltd. have allocated 60 hectares of the 1,957 hectares of shrimp farming area in East Gia Lai for the second crop of 2025 to high-tech shrimp farming. Viet-Uc Phu My Co., Ltd. achieves an average yield of 30 to 40 tons per hectare per crop at the My Thanh High-Tech Agricultural Zone (An Luong Commune, Gia Lai), which operates over 160.5 hectares of commercial shrimp aquaculture. Pham Thanh Nhan shared: "Gia Lai's pertinent agencies are encouraging high-tech shrimp enterprises, including Viet-Uc Phu My Co., Ltd., Thanh Ly Co., Ltd., and Ngoc Chau Co., Ltd., to expand their commercial shrimp farming capacity in accordance with their approved projects". 

Ngo Dinh Thanh, a shrimp farmer in An Luong Commune (Gia Lai), asserted that the use of Semi-Biofloc technology in sand-dune shrimp farming results in commercial shrimp that consumers highly favor, enhances disease control, reduces feed consumption, and limits antibiotic use.

At that time, Nguyen Ngoc Chau, Director of Ngoc Chau Co., Ltd., reported that the organization had effectively established a high-tech shrimp farming area spanning over 8 hectares in De Gi Commune (Gia Lai). Since transitioning to the Semi-Biofloc technology, his shrimp habitats have experienced a substantial decrease in disease and pollution, which has resulted in an increase in revenue and profit.

Fifteen years ago, Nguyen Ngoc Chau began to shift toward intensive whiteleg shrimp farming across 8.2 hectares. After a few crops, his ponds encountered obstacles due to water pollution and disease. He progressively transitioned to the Semi-Biofloc technology in 2016, and it has remained consistent since then. To mitigate the effects of external factors, all waters are equipped with sterilization measures and camera monitoring systems.

Chau clarified that the Semi-Biofloc technology enhances the nutritional regime and water filtration in the agricultural ponds, thereby guaranteeing a high level of safety. It reduces the risk of disease and pollution, thereby enabling shrimp to grow at a quicker pace and increase their chances of success.

"The operation is profitable, as the farmed shrimp are safe and farmers can be 80% certain of success, despite the high capital investment required for shrimp farming with Semi-Biofloc technology". Chau disclosed, "Nets enclose all of my ponds to prevent flies from entering, and the feeding process is conducted by automated machines that administer predetermined dosages. This approach mitigates water pollution caused by surplus feed".

He also noted that the price of shrimp in the first crop of 2025 was significantly higher than in previous years. Currently, shrimp with a total of 35 per kilogram are priced at over USD 8.80 per kilogram. The total output was nearly 600 tons, with 8.2 hectares of reservoirs (approximately 75 tons per hectare).

"In the recent first crop of 2025, the heaviest shrimp in my farm reached 19 count per kilogram. While traditional shrimp farming only yields about 30 tons per hectare, high-tech farming can sometimes achieve yields of 60 to 70 tons per hectare," Nguyen Ngoc Chau concluded.

Shrimp farming on sand dunes is currently one of the most profitable pond models for many shrimp farmers. However, to achieve optimal efficiency, farmers must have sufficient experience in properly designing and constructing the pond model according to the required technical specifications. Otherwise, the pond may face the risk of being washed away, and the wastewater discharged into the environment can cause serious consequences such as saltwater intrusion, threats to protective forests, and the potential for disease outbreaks.
