Carrying out fishery extension work, the Agricultural Extension Center of Kien Giang province has built and deployed models to convert from traditional cage farming with wooden plants to farming with HDPE plastic cages. The result is that in the 2022–2023 period, fishermen have been supported to convert 69 cages, with a farming area volume of 3,531 m3.
Switching from traditional cages to HDPE plastic cages helps fishermen limit risks because the cages are durable and have a long lifespan; protect the environment; improve output; and increase profits.
In addition, the farming process is also converted from using trash fish exploited from the wild to using industrial pellet food, minimizing environmental pollution and contributing to the protection of aquatic resources.
This model is deployed in the island communes of Kien Luong and Kien Hai districts and Ha Tien and Phu Quoc cities. According to evaluation results, raising marine fish using HDPE plastic cages is highly effective, with an average yield of 16 kg of commercial fish per m3, 4-5 kg/m3 higher than traditional wooden cages.
After deducting costs and depreciation, the average profit earned at each demonstration site is more than VND 170 million/crop/cage.
