World pepper prices continued to move sideways today. Last week, the world market showed mixed signals when some foreign currencies weakened slightly against the USD.

According to the International Pepper Community (IPC), the pepper cultivation area of Indonesia from 2013 to 2022 is showing an increasing trend, with a rate of 66%.

In 2022, Indonesia cultivated pepper in an area of 187,822 ha, down 1% from the previous year. This decrease may be due to the fact that pepper cultivation is less encouraged because of a number of factors, such as arable land being reduced to make room for palm growth, pepper prices being low, and fertilizer support for pepper farmers being abolished.

Indonesian pepper production has shown an upward trend since 2013 and recorded an increase of 29% over the past 10 years, reaching 81,962 tons in 2022. Along with the decrease in area, Indonesia's pepper production in 2022 decreased by 2% compared to the previous year.

Entering 2023, Indonesian pepper productivity is expected to reach 447 kg/ha, up 2% over the previous year thanks to farmers' better awareness of good agricultural practices (GAP).

In the first 3 months of 2023, Indonesia only exported 6,050 tons of pepper, down 34% compared to the same period last year.

Thus, pepper price on 05/22/2023 in the world market was unchanged compared to yesterday.
