Liberian coffee prices hit VND 23,000/kg an all-time high

We visited while Mrs Ho Thi Hai, a resident of Xa Ry village, Huong Phung commune (Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province), was harvesting Liberian coffee. Her family grows 100 Liberian coffee trees around their garden. Although the harvest is not yet complete, they have already earned over VND 10 million. According to Hai, this is the highest-yielding season for Liberian coffee ever. As soon as they harvest, traders come directly to the garden to buy at unprecedentedly high prices.

"Some trees yield up to 100kg of fresh coffee, while even the lower-yielding ones produce 30 - 40kg. If we harvest everything, just from Liberian coffee alone, we could earn tens of millions of VND. We've never seen such high yields and prices before. Everyone is very excited", Mrs Hai shared.

“At the beginning of the season, we purchased selectively harvested coffee at VND 23,000/kg. Now, the price is around VND 21,000 - 22,000/kg. The quality of Liberian coffee in Huong Hoa this year is excellent”, said Mrs Nguyen Thi Hang, Director of Khe Sanh Agricultural Cooperative.

Currently, Liberian coffee is mainly grown in the communes of Huc, Tan Long, Tan Lien, Huong Phung, and Huong Tan in Huong Hoa district, covering a total area of about 700 ha. In the 2024 season, the prices of various coffee types, including Arabica and Liberian coffee, have surged, prompting farmers to invest more in intensive farming. This has led to a significant increase in coffee yields this year.

“In previous years, Liberian coffee yields were only around 12 - 13 tons per hectare, but this year, they have risen to 15 - 17 tons/ha. Liberian coffee is not typically grown in concentrated plantations but rather as a shade tree, so it has not been heavily cultivated. Last year's coffee price increase encouraged farmers to invest more in fertilization and care”,  said Mrs Hoang Dinh Binh, Head of the Agriculture and Environment Department of Huong Hoa district.
