Vietnam emerges as the premium banana exporter to China

(VAN) Over the past year, China has significantly reduced its banana imports thus seen a surge in purchases from Vietnam and positioning the country as the largest banana supplier to the Chinese market.

According to the General Administration of Customs of China, the country's banana imports in 2024 reached 1.69 million tons, valued at USD 908 million, marking a decline of 4.6% in volume and 16% in value compared to the same period last year.

Notably, Vietnam became China’s top banana supplier, exporting 625,000 tons worth USD 261 million—an impressive increase of 28% in volume and 7% in value year-on-year. In contrast, banana imports from the Philippines saw a sharp decline, plummeting by 32% in volume and 39% in value, totaling 463,000 tons and USD 262 million.

In 2024, the average import price of bananas into China stood at USD 538 per ton, reflecting a decrease of 12.1% compared to 2023. The average import price dropped across most suppliers, with the notable exception of Mexico, which experienced a price increase.
