Vietnam and Italy share numerous similarities in geography, culture, cuisine, and economic structure, boasting a plethora of small and medium-sized businesses. The agricultural sectors of both nations are akin and complementary, spanning various industries and products.

Agricultural product trade is a cornerstone of the ongoing collaboration between the Vietnamese and Italian Ministries of Agriculture. In 2023, Vietnam exported seafood, coffee, pepper, cashews, vegetables, wood, and rubber to Italy, amounting to $500 million USD.

"We are delighted to witness the steady growth of agricultural trade between our two nations over the years. Many Vietnamese agricultural products, such as coffee, seafood, and spices like cinnamon and anise, have gained popularity in the Italian market," expressed Minister Le Minh Hoan.

The Minister further emphasized that Vietnam not only produces agricultural goods for domestic consumption but also exports to numerous countries worldwide. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development places significant emphasis on food safety to safeguard consumers, striving to deliver high-quality, low-emission, responsible, transparent, and sustainable agricultural products.

During the meeting, Mr. Francesco Lollobrigida, the Italian Minister of Agriculture, commended the robust development of Vietnamese agriculture in recent years. He remarked, "Vietnam and Italy share many similarities. We both prioritize producing high-quality agricultural products while ensuring food safety and nutrition. In this regard, Italy and Vietnam have ample opportunities for further collaboration."

Touching upon the fundamental values of agricultural production, Minister Le Minh Hoan underscored the issue of IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing, emphasizing its significance as a focal point for the industry. This presents an opportunity for the fishing industry to transition from small-scale, individual tropical fisheries to responsible fishery management. Removing the IUU yellow card is not only an urgent requirement for Vietnam, crucial for developing a sustainable seafood farming and exploitation industry, but also underscores the country's responsibility in maintaining Vietnam's reputation on the international stage," Minister Le Minh Hoan stated. He expressed gratitude to the Italian side for its significant attention and support to Vietnam on this issue in recent times.

Minister Lollobrigida acknowledged Vietnam's efforts in implementing the recommendations of the European Union and shared the challenges encountered in the process. He also highlighted an important event: the 10th European Parliament election in June 2024. Consequently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development anticipates potential changes in international trade policies as well as adjustments in the personnel structure of the European Commission (EC). On Italy's part, the head of the Ministry of Agriculture pledged to offer technical support and resources to assist Vietnam in developing a sustainable fisheries industry.

Furthermore, to facilitate the import and export of agricultural products and food, Vietnam and Italy will enhance information sharing and exchange technical knowledge in areas such as plant quarantine regulations and food safety and quality management for agricultural, forestry, and fishery products.

Looking ahead, Minister Le Minh Hoan expressed hope that Italy would share technology and expertise in addressing current challenges faced by both countries, such as drought and water scarcity, and collaborate to devise reasonable solutions. Additionally, he proposed coordinating seminars to share experiences, leveraging each country's strengths, such as Italy's agricultural mechanization and Vietnam's indigenous agricultural knowledge, and jointly showcasing handicraft products and advantageous agricultural goods at agricultural exhibitions in both countries.

Regarding forestry, Minister Le Minh Hoan appealed to Italy for support in implementing the VPA/FLEGT Agreement and the Trade and Sustainable Development chapter of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

They appointed focal points to execute the agreed-upon initiatives promptly. This entails joint efforts to innovate and improve farming techniques, develop resilient crop varieties, and enhance agricultural productivity.

Through collaborative research projects and knowledge exchange programs, Vietnam and Italy aim to harness the latest advancements in agricultural science and technology to address emerging challenges and capitalize on new opportunities. By fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning, the two countries seek to strengthen their agricultural industries and contribute to global food security and sustainability efforts.
