'The secret behind GMO corn' won first prize at the Gen Z Biotech Challenge 2023

The Gen Z Biotech Challenge aspired to foster a dynamic space for the younger generation to explore innovative ways of communicating about biotechnology in agriculture. This competition aimed to provide a fresh platform for young science enthusiasts to delve into diverse content and approaches related to the application of biotechnology in agriculture.

Addressing the opening of the final round, Dr. Le Huy Ham, the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at the University of Technology, VNU, and the Head of the jury, expressed the significance of biotechnology's role in the intelligent development plans of the Party and government.

Dr. Ham highlighted recent developments, noting that the General Secretary had personally signed a decision in early 2023 to advance biotechnology research and application until 2030, with a vision extending to 2045. This commitment presents a tremendous opportunity for biotechnology to contribute significantly to the country's socio-economic growth.

He encouraged the young participants by expressing hope that today's students would soon engage with and understand the potential of biotechnology development. He emphasized that participating in this video creation contest would equip them with valuable knowledge and methodologies, enabling them to contribute to the ongoing development of biotechnology, aligning with societal expectations.

The 'Gen Z Biotech Challenge 2023' final round thus served not only as a showcase of creativity and passion but also as a crucial step in preparing the next generation to navigate the evolving landscape of biotechnology in agriculture.

Launched in early October 2023, the contest garnered enthusiastic participation, receiving over 100 video entries from students representing 20 high schools and universities nationwide. Following a rigorous selection process comprising a preliminary round and two online competition rounds, the organizing committee identified the top 6 videos, which advanced to the eagerly awaited Final Round held live in Hanoi. These six videos stood out for their contemporary themes, robust scientific content, and effective communication messages.

Participants in the contest not only showcased their creative prowess but also had the invaluable opportunity to engage in tutorials on scientific content and digital content creation related to biotechnology. Renowned experts in biotechnology and media, specially brought in for the contest, imparted their knowledge to the aspiring young minds.

Mr. Ralph Bean, Agricultural Counselor of the US Embassy, expressed his high regard for the contest videos. He commended the participating student teams as exemplifying the spirit of creativity, collaboration, and bold engagement in the biotechnology field. He emphasized the ongoing commitment to fostering US-Vietnam cooperation in creating favorable conditions for applying biotechnology and innovation in agriculture. Mr. Bean highlighted that the competition serves as a platform for students to share knowledge and gain early exposure to science, contributing significantly to promoting sustainable Vietnamese agriculture and reducing emissions.

Ms. Dang Ngoc Chi, CropLife Vietnam, echoed Mr. Bean's sentiments. She emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture in Vietnam's economy, acknowledging that, despite its importance, the sector has not been the preferred choice for the young generation in the modern era. Ms. Chi expressed hope that the competition would serve as a playground for young people, inspiring them to delve deeper into applied science and technology within the agricultural industry, ultimately contributing to its sustainable growth.

In the energetic final round, the top 6 contestants showcased their creative products, presenting innovative ideas while fielding questions from the esteemed panel of judges—leading experts in both biotechnology and communications. The jury's feedback was not only constructive but also insightful, providing the participants with valuable insights into refining their work.

Ultimately, a dynamic group of students from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at the University of Technology - Hanoi National University emerged victorious, clinching the first prize with their captivating video titled "The Secret Behind Genetically Modified Corn." Judges praised the contest entries for their visually stunning exploitation images, effective use of vibrant graphics, and the incorporation of well-crafted English subtitles, demonstrating proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, and readability.

Nguyen The Ngoc Phuong and Hoang Thi Hong Nga, the triumphant champions of the Gen Z Biotech Challenge, shared their thoughts on the competition. They expressed gratitude for the learning experience, highlighting how the competition equipped them with the skills to create compelling videos and content on digital platforms. The duo emphasized their adeptness at quickly grasping technology, generating numerous ideas, and effectively connecting with the preferences of their peers.

Elated by their first-place achievement, Nguyen The Ngoc Phuong and Hoang Thi Hong Nga are eager to continue contributing to the biotechnology industry. They aspire to serve as a bridge between young individuals and the realm of science, fostering passion and interest in the field through their commitment to in-depth research. Their success symbolizes personal accomplishment and underscores the competition's role in nurturing the next generation of biotechnology enthusiasts and professionals.
