The great potential of medicinal plants in Bac Kan

(VAN) Bac Kan province has a natural forest area of nearly 273,000 ha with great potential for growing medicinal plants under the forest canopy.

Currently, the entire Bac Kan province has planted more than 400 ha of medicinal plants. Some medicinal plants are widely grown such as polygonum multiflorum, yellow camellia, climbing nightshade, wild bitter melon, cinnamon, anise, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, purple antler... In recent years, realizing the value of some medicinal plant species, forest owners have purchased seedlings or propagated them to plant them under the forest canopy.

Currently, most medicinal plants have been processed into products with high economic value such as curcumin, ginger, turmeric; red glutinous turmeric starch, Solanum procumbens, wild bitter melon tea, yellow flower tea, Gynostemma tea, anise oil, cinnamon oil...

In the coming time, Bac Kan province plans to expand the area of velvet trees, yellow flower tea, cardamom, ginseng, golden orchids, seven-leaved flowers, and purple antler trees under the forest canopy. Especially, attract cooperatives to invest in high-altitude forest areas with cool, humid climates in the Ba Be, Na Ri, Pac Nam, and Cho Don districts.

Bac Kan province has set a goal of becoming the capital of medicinal plants growing in the near future. Accordingly, the locality has issued a policy to support cooperatives in the production and consumption of products from medicinal plants. Focus on consulting support for link building, machinery and equipment support, building agricultural extension models, and technical training.

In 2023, the People's Committee of Bac Kan province will continue to implement investment projects and support the development of precious medicinal herb growing areas according to Decision No. 1719/QD-TTg dated October 14, 2021, of the Prime Minister. Currently, the Bac Kan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has surveyed, evaluated and selected locations for growing precious medicinal herbs in the province. Bac Kan determines that developing medicinal plants is one of the important driving forces in developing the forest economy, opening up a new direction and diversifying income for people.
