1 million hs of seasonal rice at risk due to typhoon no. 3

In light of typhoon no. 3, which is forecasted to reach super typhoon levels, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep stated that this is the strongest typhoon in the past 20 years to hit the Gulf of Tonkin. The forecast shows that when it reaches land, the typhoon will weaken to level 12 with a level 4 disaster risk. The Deputy Minister requested the Directorate of Dykes Management and Disaster Prevention and Control to provide recommendations.

On the morning of September 6, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will send delegations to localities to monitor and direct the situation as the typhoon is expected to impact agricultural production. With decisive administrative measures in place, it is crucial to inform and encourage people to reinforce their homes and protect their assets. Additionally, water drainage and reservoir operations need to be calculated.

According to the Directorate of Water Resources and the Disaster Management Agency, if the typhoon proceeds as forecast, the Northern Delta region will face severe impacts, particularly in agricultural production. Currently, about 1 million ha of rice in the region are in the heading and flowering stages, which are highly susceptible to severe damage if heavy rain and storms occur. The North Central region also has about 15,000 ha of rice nearing harvest, increasing the risk of crop loss. Furthermore, various vegetables, aquaculture, and fruit trees will also be significantly affected if the storm persists.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung stated that other sectors could take flexible measures, but the planting sector “must stay put.” The Department of Crop Production has issued detailed instructions to localities on how to handle rice, industrial crops, and fruit trees before and after the storm hits.

Deputy Minister Hoang Trung emphasized that if about 1 million hectares of seasonal rice (expected to yield 6 million tons) are not well protected, achieving the national goal of producing 43 million tons of rice in 2024 will be difficult. Additionally, about 63,000 ha of vegetables and other fruit trees need to be monitored and calculated.

Vegetables and rice are the two areas that will be most affected. Therefore, it is necessary to closely monitor the situation, and deploying inspection teams to localities will help ensure flexible and thorough management, improving local responses, Deputy Minister Hoang Trung stated.
