Hanoi's goods fulfill just between 30% to 65% of agricultural demand

(VAN) Hanoi has around 189,000 ha of agriculture land area, accounting for 56% of the total, yet many vital products and items produced and supplied by Hanoi only fulfill 30 - 65% of demand.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Quyen, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, proposed the concept at the 8th session of The 970 Agricultural Connection Forum, which was conducted electronically on October 23.

The event, themed "Sharing Information and Connecting Agro-forestry-fisheries Trade Between Hanoi and Localities," seeks to connect agriculture in Hanoi with 40 provinces and towns.

According to the Hanoi authority, the capital has a strategic geographic and political location and is the North's biggest city. Hanoi is also a commodities consuming market with a huge distribution network, facilitating the growth of manufacturing and commerce in the Red River Delta and across the nation.

However, the necessary items and commodities produced and supplied by Hanoi only fulfill around 30% to 60% of demand.

Distributors, supermarkets, food chains, and dealers from provinces and cities link and exploit the lack of commodities by introducing sources of agricultural, forestry, and fisheries products, as well as safe fruit.

Distribution networks, supermarkets, and food chains in Hanoi supported the consumption of nearly 220,000 tons of commodities from provinces and cities during the first ten months of 2021. Numerous items created in provinces and cities according to the "one commune-one product" (OCOP) model have been linked and placed in 35 points of introduction to sell OCOP products in Hanoi; units promote the sale of vital commodities through e-commerce websites, business hotlines...

To continue promoting, connecting, and consuming safe agricultural, forestry, and fisheries goods from provinces and cities in the Hanoi market, the city will study and deploy trade promotion programs and events that adapt safely and flexibly to the city's Covid-19 pandemic...

Hanoi may have difficulties supplying agricultural commodities in Lunar New Year

According to Ms Tran Thi Phuong Lan, Acting Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade, the monthly demand for essential goods is as follows: rice 92,970 tons (self-sufficient capacity of 56,338 tons, meeting 65.6 percent of demand); live pork 18,594 tons (self-sufficient capacity of 17,500 tons, meeting 94.1 percent of demand); beef 5,350 tons (self-sufficient capacity of 1,032 tons, meeting 1 percent of demand) (self-sufficiency 10,671 tons).

Additionally, capital people have dietary preferences for fish, processed meals, vegetables, fruits, and eggs. While production of certain of those items meets around 65.1 percent to 94.2 percent of demand (veggies and eggs), production of the other goods meets less than 30% of demand.

Ms. Lan further said that since some vital commodities including as pork, chicken, waterfowl, and seafood are now priced too cheap, individuals are disinclined to re-herd, prompting the Hanoi Department of Industry and Trade to intervene. During the forthcoming Lunar New Year, availability of these items is expected to be challenging.

Hanoi wants provinces and cities' Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development to collaborate on implementing the Tet holiday plan and connecting agricultural product supply and demand; introducing businesses and establishments producing agricultural products and food to Hanoi's distribution channels.

"Hanoi is also willing to coordinate efforts to link agricultural goods from provinces and cities around the nation to global grocery chains such as MM Mega Maket, BigC, and Aeon Mail." Simultaneously, promote agriculture and food goods. "We will sell safe items on 600 e-commerce websites and e-commerce platforms in order to increase exports," Ms. Lan said.
