Ben Tre green coconut is granted a certificate of protection by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.
This is an essential step in enhancing the brand value of agricultural products of Ben Tre province in particular and Vietnam in general in the international arena.
The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has simultaneously approved exclusive protection for both trademarks: "Ben Tre Pomelo & Device" trademark for green-skinned pomelo with registration number TMA1,257,893 and "Ben Tre Coconut & Device" trademark for green coconut with registration number TMA1,257,904. The Department of Science and Technology of Ben Tre province is recognized as owning the two certification trademarks.
Geographical indications and certification trademarks are intellectual properties. They are also effective legal tools to not only prevent infringements but also create the premise for the province's agricultural products to be called "BEN TRE" when going global.
Canada is a potential market for Ben Tre province, which aims to export high-value goods and is also in good condition to expand global exports. Therefore, the agricultural sector has strengthened propaganda and guided farmers to produce green coconuts, green-skinned grapefruits, and other fruit trees according to VietGAP, Global GAP, organic standards, value chain production... to improve the quality of goods.
Therefore, Ben Tre has chosen a market with the world's top high standards, like Canada, to build a brand for local agricultural products.
The success in protecting intellectual property rights for "Ben Tre green-skinned pomelo" and "Ben Tre green coconut" not only recognizes the tireless efforts of the entire Ben Tre province in affirming the quality and characteristics of the products in the international market but also opens a new door for regional economic development, especially in the field of agricultural exports.
In the coming time, Ben Tre province must continue investing heavily in improving product quality and expanding the market while strengthening marketing strategies to promote the "Ben Tre" brand widely, contributing to building the image of Vietnam as a country producing high-quality agricultural products on the world map.
