C.P. Viet Nam achieves 1.5 million trees milestone in long-term ESG strategy

(VAN) C.P. Viet Nam has announced the successful completion of its goal to plant 1.5 million trees during the 2021-2025 period, a key milestone within company's long-term ESG strategy and its roadmap for emission reduction.

The announcement regarding C.P. Viet Nam's completion of the 1.5 million-tree goal for the 2021–2025 phase was shared at the "CPV Innovation & SHE Sustainability 2025" event.

This activity falls under the project "C.P. Viet Nam - Journey for a Green Viet Nam," which was launched in response to the Government's initiative to plant 1 billion trees and the C.P. Group's target of 20 million trees.

Since 2021, C.P. Viet Nam has been planting trees within the premises of its factories and farms, and in collaboration with various local authorities across the country.

The 1.5 million-tree goal was implemented over four years across the company's network of factories, farms, and in numerous coastal areas and protective forests. The final tally shows that the actual number of trees planted exceeded 1.52 million, with over 57 hectares of planted forest meeting the "established forest" standard, demonstrating a survival rate of over 85%. These results underscore the stable progress achieved through the coordination between C.P. Viet Nam and related stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony summarizing the five-year journey of "C.P. Viet Nam - Journey for a Green Viet Nam," Mr. Pawalit Ua-Amornwanit, CEO of C.P. Viet Nam, stated: "The program is not only aimed at creating more green spaces but is also designed as an emission reduction solution compliant with ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance)  standards. The newly planted trees are estimated to absorb over 38,000 tons of CO₂ by 2030, contributing to the company's carbon neutrality goal and national environmental commitments. Planting trees in mangrove forests and protective forests also helps enhance dike protection capabilities, reduce erosion, and improve climate change adaptation in locally affected areas."

Alongside its tree-planting efforts, C.P. Viet Nam is implementing several other ESG programs, such as phasing out coal usage since 2021, increasing the proportion of renewable energy in production, operating Biogas systems at its farms, and joining PRO Viet Nam to fulfill its Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations in the packaging sector. These initiatives form a comprehensive foundational strategy for achieving emission reduction targets and developing a circular economy model.

From a social perspective, the tree-planting program is recognized for its positive ripple effect by actively involving local communities. Environmental education and communication activities have been carried out simultaneously at planting sites, helping to raise awareness and foster a sense of responsibility among residents for protecting natural resources.

Mr. Worawit Arunraksa, C.P. Viet Nam’s Director of Sustainable Development, commented: "The completion of the 1.5 million-tree goal is the result of continuous coordination between the company, the government, and the community. We are committed to further expanding our environmental activities, aligning with the company's sustainable development objectives in the coming phase."

C.P. Viet Nam has been consistently recognized for its sustainability efforts, receiving awards such as being listed in the Top 100 Sustainable Businesses in Viet Nam (CSI) and the Top 10 ASEAN Green Growth Brands for multiple consecutive years. According to industry experts, the greatest value of the 1.5 million-tree program lies in how the company has transformed an environmental objective into a verifiable, practical action firmly tied to its long-term ESG strategy.

Viet Nam has identified nature-based solutions as a core pathway for achieving its climate commitments, especially after announcing its Net Zero target at COP26. The Government’s programme to plant one billion trees by 2025 aims not only to restore degraded forest areas but also to strengthen coastal protection, reduce erosion, and improve microclimates across agricultural regions.

As one of Viet Nam’s largest integrated agribusinesses, C.P. Viet Nam operates hundreds of farms, feed mills, and food-processing facilities nationwide, placing it among the enterprises most directly exposed to climate risks such as extreme heat, flooding, and saline intrusion. Globally, agrifood corporations are shifting toward ESG models that include forest restoration, carbon sequestration, circular production, and stricter waste-management systems to meet investor expectations and international supply-chain requirements. Companies supplying major export markets are especially under pressure to quantify emissions and demonstrate progress toward sustainable sourcing.

In this context, large-scale afforestation programs like C.P. Viet Nam’s align with emerging trends in corporate climate leadership: integrating carbon-removal activities into operational planning, contributing to national environmental goals, and strengthening resilience in regions where production activities depend heavily on stable ecosystems. Industry experts view these commitments as increasingly essential for companies operating in food and livestock value chains.
