Both a land of tragic yet heroic history and a pristine wilderness amid the open sea, Con Dao captivates visitors with its unique blend of painful past, majestic nature, and a serene, unhurried rhythm of life.
From above, the archipelago looks like a ribbon of green silk stretched across the vast ocean. Dense ancient forests embrace white sandy shores, while vibrant coral reefs flourish beneath crystal-clear waters. Somewhere in the distance, the calls of birds echo through the sky, and the steady sound of waves against the shore resounds like nature's eternal heartbeat.
Con Dao draws visitors in with its rare blend of a painful past and breathtaking nature.
In 1993, Con Dao National Park was officially established. It covers nearly 20,000 hectares, including more than 5,800 hectares of special-use forest and 14,000 hectares of marine area with an extensive buffer zone. With a forest coverage rate of over 92%, an impressive figure that reflects not only the resilience of nature but also relentless conservation efforts, the island has laid a strong foundation for the steady rise of eco-tourism, turning Con Dao into a precious gem of Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
As the boat docks, visitors' first impression is a rare sense of purity. The wind carries the salty breath of the sea, mingled with the earthy fragrance of ancient forests. It evokes a sensation both wild and familiar, as if one were rediscovering oneself in the wide embrace of nature.
When asked about the most memorable experience in Con Dao, the answers are always diverse, for each traveler finds a unique moment of their own. Some choose trekking through the primeval forest, where sunlight filters through the dense canopy, leaving golden streaks along damp trails. The hum of insects, the rustling of leaves, and suddenly the sharp call of a seabird – all merge into a grand symphony of the wilderness. Along the way, you might catch sight of the agile Con Dao black squirrel leaping from branch to branch, or a monitor lizard basking lazily at the foot of an ancient tree. Emerging from the forest, one is greeted by the vast expanse of Mui Chim Chim or Hon Tre, where the boundless sky and sea stretch before you, leaving you in awe-struck silence before the immensity of nature.
Eco-tourism in Con Dao is steadily rising, becoming a precious gem of Vietnam and Southeast Asia.
But if the forest is a heroic epic, then the sea of Con Dao is a lyrical symphony in many hues. With just a diving mask, you’ll discover an entirely different world beneath the waves – dazzling, enchanting, and teeming with life. Colorful coral reefs in every shape and form, schools of fish darting playfully, and rays of sunlight piercing through the water weave together into a shimmering dance of colors. For those who love exploration, immersing oneself in that deep blue ocean feels like stepping into a living museum, where every creature is a work of art.
And then, when night falls, another miracle takes place. On the untouched sandy shores, sea turtles – creatures that have been bound to Con Dao for centuries, return to entrust their new lives. In the darkness, you can see them slowly crawling ashore, their flippers pushing the sand, their eyes gleaming with a primal instinct. It is a moment when all other sounds seem to fade, giving way to the sacred rhythm of nature. At dawn, as the hatchlings waddle toward the waves to begin their journey of life, visitors’ hearts tighten with emotion. Perhaps nowhere else in the world allows one to feel like a true “witness to miracles” quite like Con Dao.
From above, the archipelago appears like a ribbon of green silk stretched across the vast ocean.
Yet Con Dao is more than just nature. It is also a land of memory, where every stone and every tree bears the imprint of history. Walking through the prison relics, one can feel the harshness of the once so-called “hell on earth,” where countless revolutionaries laid down their lives for the nation’s independence. Then, at Hang Duong Cemetery, lighting incense at the grave of national heroine Vo Thi Sau, visitors not only pay tribute but also quietly draw spiritual strength. In this harmony, Con Dao offers a dual experience: both an ecological paradise and a living monument to the nation’s history.
Recognizing this unique value, the Con Dao National Park Management Board has set out a strategic vision for eco-tourism development to 2030, with a horizon to 2050. At its core is conservation: coral restoration, sea turtle rescue, and the use of digital technology in monitoring forests and seas. Alongside this is the strategy to develop high-quality tourism: diversifying products, creating specialized tours, and investing in supporting infrastructure without harming the environment. Capacity building, communication, and international promotion are also emphasized, positioning Con Dao as a symbol of green and responsible tourism.
With this vision, Con Dao does not aim to become the "most crowded destination," but rather the "most meaningful one." Here, every visitor comes not only to enjoy but also to take part in the journey of conservation. Every step, every glance, every moment of experience becomes a way of walking hand in hand with nature.
Perhaps that is Con Dao’s greatest value. A destination where, upon leaving, you carry not just a collection of beautiful photos, but a promise in your heart. A promise to love every patch of forest and every ocean wave, to cherish each miracle of nature, and to live more responsibly with our blue planet.
Con Dao is not just a travel destination. It is a spiritual and ecological journey, which is a place where people return to seek balance, a reminder that amidst life’s hurried pace, there remains a haven to pause, to live slowly, and to be grateful.
