The aromatic coconut is a specialty coconut variety characterized by its natural pandan-leaf fragrance, refreshingly sweet water, and soft, creamy flesh. Thanks to this distinctive flavor profile, this coconut variety is highly sought after by consumers.
Currently, this aromatic coconut variety is undergoing experimental development in Ca Mau Province. Displaying excellent adaptability to coastal soil conditions, it is highly expected to become a signature fruit crop of the locality in the near future.

Ca Mau Province possesses a sub-equatorial climate, alluvial soil interspersed with salt and alum, and a dense network of rivers and canals. These provide favorable conditions for developing specialty coconut varieties, among which the aromatic coconut has shown excellent adaptability and stable growth.
At present, the Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is deploying an aromatic coconut cultivation model at its Station for Research and Transfer of Agricultural Technical Progress located in Vinh My commune. Spanning an acreage of approximately 2.7 hectares, the unit has planted over 300 aromatic coconut trees combined with a ditch-aquaculture fish-farming model within the orchard to maximize land-use efficiency.
Following a period of cultivation, many trees have begun bearing fruit and are being supplied to markets within the province as well as several provinces and cities nationwide. According to Ms. Nguyen Kim Thuy from the Station for Research and Transfer of Agricultural Technical Progress, the aromatic coconut is a variety holding numerous advantages.

“Aromatic coconuts begin harvesting after about 3.5 to 4 years of planting. The average productivity reaches 70-100 fruits per tree per year, and can surpass 120 fruits with optimal care. The defining trait is that the coconut water carries a natural pandan-leaf aroma and a refreshingly sweet taste, making it highly favored by the market,” Ms. Thuy shared.
Regarding growth characteristics, the aromatic coconut tree has a moderate canopy and reaches an average mature height of 8-12 meters. The fruits are smaller in size compared to conventional Xiem coconuts, featuring a light green husk. Each fruit contains approximately 250-350 ml of coconut water. Beyond its value as a refreshing beverage, the soft, rich, and fragrant coconut flesh offers great advantages for processing various products.
The cultivation techniques for aromatic coconuts are similar to ordinary coconut varieties; the trees suffer few pests and are relatively easy to grow. However, due to the cross-pollination nature of coconut trees, growers need to avoid intercropping them alongside other coconut varieties to limit hybridization, which can cause the fruit to lose its characteristic fragrance.

Alongside its massive potential, developing aromatic coconuts in Ca Mau currently faces a few bottlenecks, such as a fragmented and small production scale and the absence of concentrated, specialized farming zones. Deep processing industries remain restricted, with most products still consumed in the form of fresh, raw coconuts.
In addition, securing certified, high-quality breeding stocks is a major focus for the local agricultural sector. “The Ca Mau Provincial Agricultural Extension Center is finalizing the documentation to recognize elite stock trees for our aromatic coconuts. Once approved, the Center will proactively supply quality-assured breeding stocks to local farmers across the province,” Ms. Nguyen Kim Thuy informed.

According to assessments from the local agricultural sector, the value of aromatic coconut products can be elevated substantially in the coming time if production is integrated alongside ecotourism models, experiential agricultural tourism, and investments in primary and deep processing stages.
With strategic orientations to expand farming zones, secure proactive breeding sources, and step-by-step construct a solid value chain, Ca Mau's aromatic coconuts are highly expected to become a flagship fruit specialty, contributing to diversifying livelihoods and maximizing incomes for farmers in the country's southernmost region.
