Vietnam's rice exports surpass 165 million USD in early January

Vietnam exported nearly 270,000 tons of rice, valued at 165 million USD, from January 1 to 15, 2025, a 38% increase in volume and a 23% increase in value compared to the same period last year, according to the Vietnam Food Association. It is anticipated that Vietnam's rice exports will amount to 7.5 million tons in 2025, a decrease from the previous record of over 9 million tons set in 2024.

Numerous businesses anticipate that the potential for rice exports in 2025 will be limited due to the high baseline of 2024 and a multitude of unfavorable market factors, including India's resumption of rice exports. 

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) reported that the 2024-2025 winter-spring crop in the provinces and districts of the Mekong Delta had reached 1.462 million hectares of sown area by January 20, out of the planned 1.569 million hectares. Additionally, harvesting has commenced in an estimated 85,000 hectares. 

Currently, the Mekong Delta provinces are experiencing a slowdown in purchasing of rice. Farmers who have harvested rice prior to Tet have encountered challenges in seeking buyers, and the prices of specific varieties of rice have decreased in comparison to the previous month. In particular, the price of IR 504 (fresh) rice has decreased by 700 VND/kg, and it is currently priced between 5,500 and 5,700 VND/kg. Additionally, the price of OM 5451 rice decreased by 700 VND/kg, with a fluctuation between 5,800 and 6,000 VND/kg. The decrease in rice prices is primarily due to the abundance of global rice supply, particularly from significant competitors such as India and Thailand. 

Regular rice is priced between 15,000 and 17,000 VND/kg in the retail market. Thai fragrant long-grain rice is priced between 20,000 and 22,000 VND/kg. Jasmine rice is priced between 18,000 and 20,000 VND/kg. Common white rice is priced at 17,500 VND/kg. Nang Hoa rice is priced at 21,500 VND/kg. Huong Lai rice is priced at 22,000 VND/kg. Taiwanese fragrant rice is priced at 21,000 VND/kg. Common Sóc rice is priced at approximately 18,000 VND/kg. Soc Thai rice is priced at 21,000 VND/kg. Japanese rice is priced at 22,000 VND/kg. 

Raw IR 504 rice is priced at 7,500-7,700 VND/kg, while refined IR 504 rice is priced between 9,500 and 9,700 VND/kg. The price of raw OM 380 rice varies between 7,300 and 7,500 VND/kg, while the price of completed OM 380 rice ranges from 8,800 to 9,000 VND/kg.
