Vietnam imports nearly 3.1 million tonnes of wheat in the first eight months of 2021

(VAN) In the first eight months of this year, Vietnam imported nearly 3.1 million tonnes of wheat, excessing the total wheat volume it imported the whole last year.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first eight months of this year, Vietnam imported nearly 3.1 million tonnes of wheat worth about US$ 880 million, marking an increase of 78.6 per cent in volume and 95.6 per cent in value compared with those of the same period last year.

Meanwhile, last year the country reportedly imported about 2.9 million tonnes of wheat worth $755 million.

Customs’ statistics showed that Vietnam spent $683.45 million on importing 2.39 million tonnes of wheat from Australia in the first eight months of this year.

Wheat from Australia accounted for 77 per cent of total wheat imported to Vietnam during that time.

 Compared with the same period of last year, Australia’s wheat exports to Vietnam increased 368.2 per cent in value and 355.4 per cent in volume.

Meanwhile, in the first half of this year, Vietnam imported nearly 2.31 million tonnes of wheat worth about $641.54 million as the average wheat price was $278 per ton.

Besides Australia, other major wheat exporters to Vietnam are Brazil, the US, Russia and Canada.
