Vietnam import fertilizer mainly from China

Vietnam has to import millions of tons of fertilizer for domestic agriculture production every year, with China being the largest source.
Over 3.8 million tons of fertilizer are imported to Vietnam in 2020.

According to the Vietnam Market Analysis and Forecast Joint Stock Company (Agromonitor), in 2020, Vietnam has imported more than 3.8 million tons of fertilizer of all kinds, with a turnover of nearly US$ 970 million, up 1.72% in volume but down 7.36% in turnover compared to 2019.

In the year 2020, the import volume and turnover of the majority of types of fertilizer all go up, such as Kali (up 31.34%), DAP (up 13.9%), SA (up 0.23%),…; meanwhile, Urea imports sharply decreased by 78.8% compared to 2019 and only reached 82,400 tons.

Kali is the fertilizer type that was imported the most in the total import volume, occupies a proportion of 29.7%, 6.7% higher compared to 2019; SA accounts for 25.63%; DAP accounts for 15.37%; NPK accounts for 11.96%…

In 2020, Vietnam had imported fertilizer from 56 markets, and China is still Vietnam’s biggest fertilizer supply market. In the past year, fertilizer imports from the China market reached 1.58 million tons, with a turnover of US$ 365 million, up 2.72% in volume but down 4.96% in turnover compared to 2019. Fertilizer imported from China accounts for 41.06% of Vietnam’s total fertilizer amount.

Vietnam’s imports from China mainly are SA fertilizer (45.82%), DAP (28.53%), and NPK (9.99%). These 3 fertilizer types account for 84.35% of the total amount of fertilizer imported from China. In particular, the import volume of fertilizers from China increased for types SA (up 1.19%), DAP (up 17.05%),… while there’s a decrease for NPK (down 8.6%), MAP (down 28.25%).

Other major import markets such as Russia, Japan, Israel, Korea, Canada,… also experience a strong increase rate in 2020. In contrast to the markets above, fertilizer import volumes from Belarus, Laos, Thailand… have plummeted.

Vietnam mainly imports Kali, NPK and DAP from Russia. To be specific, Kali’s import volume reached 255.68 thousand tons, up 117.37%; NPK’s import volume reached 137.96 thousand tons, up 4.02%; DAP’s import volume reached 30.5 thousand tons, up 41.32%.

Fertilizer imports from Russia reached 422.04 thousand tons in 2020, with a turnover of US$ 126.96 million, a 58.7% sharp increase in volume and 37.99% in turnover compared to 2019. Fertilizers imported from Russia account for 10.98% of the total fertilizer import volume.

The amount of fertilizer imported to Vietnam from the 10 biggest supply markets reached 3.4 million tons, occupied a proportion of more than 88.37% of the total import volume, up over 8.6% compared to the proportion of 2019.
