Vietnam - Chile promote cooperation in agriculture and sustainable development

On the morning of November 11 (local time), at the Presidential Palace, after the solemn welcoming ceremony, President of the Republic of Chile Gabriel Boric Font had a private meeting and held official talks with President Luong Cuong.

At the talks, President Luong Cuong and President Gabriel Boric Font informed each other about the situation in each country; jointly assessed the development of bilateral relations; discussed directions and measures to continue bringing the Vietnam-Chile Comprehensive Partnership increasingly deeper, effective, and substantive, aiming to elevate the relationship in the coming time. At the same time, exchange on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The President affirmed that Chile always values and wishes to strengthen relations with Vietnam in its overall policy towards the Asia-Pacific region, especially in the context of Vietnam and Chile celebrating 10 years of implementing the Bilateral Free Trade Agreement and being members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

President Luong Cuong sincerely thanked President Gabriel Boric Font, the State, and the people of Chile for the respectful welcome given to Vietnam's high-level delegation. The Vietnamese President affirmed that Vietnam values the traditional friendship and comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Chile, the first country in South America to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam (on March 25, 1971), and thanked the Chilean people's valuable support for the Vietnamese people in the righteous struggle for national independence and national unification in the past and in the work of protecting and building the Fatherland today.

The President shared that this visit aims to affirm the message that Vietnam values and wishes to promote more strongly the Comprehensive Partnership with Chile and has special significance when taking place on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the historic meeting between President Ho Chi Minh and late President Salvador Allende on May 23, 1969, in Hanoi. The meeting laid the foundation for the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1971, as well as for the development of the Vietnam-Chile relationship today.

The two leaders expressed their pleasure at the growing relationship between the two countries through maintaining the exchange of high-level visits and contacts across all Party, State, National Assembly, and local channels and effectively deploying existing cooperation mechanisms such as the Free Trade Council and political consultation at the Deputy Foreign Minister level.

The two sides noted that economic and trade relations continue to be strengthened in the context of many challenges in the global economy; Chile is Vietnam's fourth largest trading partner in Latin America, and Vietnam is Chile's largest trading partner in ASEAN.

The two leaders highly appreciated Vietnam's official establishment of the Defense Attaché Office in Chile, thereby contributing to further promoting defense cooperation between the two countries in the coming time.

Both sides highly appreciated the close and effective cooperation between the two countries at international organizations and inter-regional forums, especially at the United Nations, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum, the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), the ASEAN-Pacific Alliance, etc.

The two sides agreed to continue to focus on promoting cooperation in the fields of strength and mutual concern, such as free trade, agriculture, sustainable development, renewable energy, science, education, tourism, defense, security, etc. Actively negotiate and sign bilateral cooperation documents to complete the legal framework for sustainable development of relations between the two countries. Create favorable conditions for the business communities of the two countries to strengthen business exchange and cooperation to increase bilateral turnover commensurate with the potential of the two countries. The two leaders agreed to strengthen coordination, cooperation, and mutual support at international organizations and multilateral and inter-regional forums.

Sharing the development vision of the two countries and supporting the values of free trade, cooperation for mutual development, and mutual benefit based on the potential and space for cooperation, the two leaders agreed to assign Ministries and branches of the two countries to exchange, review, update, and consider upgrading the relationship framework in the coming time. This aims to create greater space for bilateral cooperation and determine breakthrough and strategic cooperation priorities.

Leaders of the two countries also exchanged extensively and shared stances on many regional and international issues of mutual concern. Regarding the East Sea issue, both sides agreed that disputes over sovereignty and territory should be resolved by peaceful means on the basis of respect for international law, especially the Charter of the United Nations and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982).

On this occasion, President Luong Cuong respectfully conveyed the greetings of General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man to President Gabriel Boric Font and invited the President to visit Vietnam soon. The President of Chile thanked and happily accepted the invitation.

After the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of the Vietnam-Chile Joint Statement between the two Foreign Ministers, the Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation between the two countries' Ministries of Defense, and cooperation documents in the fields of agriculture, culture, trade promotion, etc., and jointly met both the national and international press.
