Viet Nam, Russia co-chair 2nd consultation session on maritime cooperation

(VAN) Recently in Moscow, Viet Nam and the Russian Federation co-chaired the second consultation session on maritime cooperation and signed a cooperation plan for the 2026-2030 period.

As part of the official visit to the Russian Federation, on May 22 in Moscow, General Phan Van Giang, Member of the Politburo and Minister of National Defence of Viet Nam, and General Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev, Assistant to the President and Chairman of the Maritime Board of the Russian Federation, co-chaired the second consultation session on cooperation in the maritime sector.

Also attending the session were Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Gau, Member of the Party Central Committee and Deputy Minister of National Defence; Dang Minh Khoi, Ambassador of Viet Nam to the Russian Federation; along with representatives from relevant agencies of both countries.

At the consultation session, General Phan Van Giang emphasized that Viet Nam highly values the Russian Federation’s role and position as a maritime power, while expressing the desire to further promote cooperation between the Ministry of National Defence of Viet Nam and the Maritime Board of the Russian Federation in a more substantive, effective, and sustainable manner.

On the Russian side, General Nikolai Platonovich Patrushev highly appreciated the significance of the maritime consultation mechanism, considering it one of the important channels contributing to the strengthening of bilateral defence cooperation within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Viet Nam and the Russian Federation.

Both sides agreed that since the first consultation session held in Viet Nam, maritime cooperation between the two countries has seen many positive developments and achieved notable results across various fields.

Key areas of cooperation include naval coordination, the signing of cooperation documents, shipbuilding industry development, marine scientific research within the framework of the Viet Nam-Russia Tropical Centre for Marine Resources and Environment, as well as marine ecosystem conservation and restoration, maritime services, and marine transportation.

The two sides also recognized human resource training as a continuing highlight of bilateral cooperation, particularly in naval officer training.

Building on these achievements, the Viet Nam Ministry of National Defence and the Russian Maritime Board agreed to continue coordinating the effective implementation of previously agreed cooperation contents, focusing on carrying out signed agreements, strengthening naval cooperation, expanding marine scientific research, and enhancing maritime training and transportation cooperation.

On this occasion, the two sides signed and exchanged the Cooperation Plan in the Maritime Sector between the Ministry of National Defence of Viet Nam and the Maritime Board of the Russian Federation for the 2026-2030 period.
