Treatment and beauty spa for pets: simple and challenging either

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoang, a vet spa expert at Quang Dung Veterinary Clinic, located at 85 Nguyen Thai Hoc Str., Quy Nhon city, Binh Dinh province, stated that he used to attend a three-month training class in Ho Chi Minh City, where trainees had to spend 40 million VND for the course. The cost might double to more than 100 million VND for a three-month course under the direction of a foreign trainer.

"The training cost is dropping to roughly 30 million VND for each course with a local trainer. A pet spa training program in Quy Nhon that costs 15 million VND/3 months includes a trainer who has been trained in Ho Chi Minh City to gain experience in the industry," Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoang shared.

According to Hoang, weights, forms, and breeds are the things to consider before advising pet owners on appropriate spa styles. For example, the poodle breed requires different grooming care than the Phu Quoc or Rohweiler breeds, likewise with the cat.

Spa package for a dog weighing 5kg takes 3-4 hours. The first step is to inspect its fur, followed by determining if it has parasites or not. The dog with fleas and ticks would be refused treatment because the fleas and ticks might spread to other dogs in the clinic during the grooming procedure.

Hoang noted that if the dog has fleas and ticks, it must be treated with an injection before grooming. Dogs that get used to the spa will be more brave and kind throughout the experience, but dogs who visit for the first time will be terrified and avoid contact with staff members.

"After the consumer chooses a style, the dog will be properly groomed, which includes brushing the fur, nail cutting, washing, thorough drying, and finally trimming and shaping. After the hair clipping, the dog's mouth and ears are washed, and a fresh scent is applied before being returned to the owner. The Poodle breed takes the longest since they may weigh up to 17-18kg and take up to 6 hours to finish," Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoang said.

Mr. Ha Van Tho, Manager of TISPET Pet Clinic on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, revealed that the clinic now employs two doctors and one employee who specializes in pet grooming. Dogs and cats are the most common pets brought to the clinic for treatment and grooming, with Poodle breeds accounting for the majority.

"When treating or grooming dogs, if we come across a gentle one, we immediately begin treatment or grooming. However, if the pet is hostile, it may bite or scratch abruptly, taking us off guard. Dogs are particularly vulnerable to rabies during the hot summer months", according to Mr. Tho.

Mr. Ho Duy Phien, a veterinarian at Quang Dung Pet Clinic, said that conducting bone operations on dogs has been the most challenging part of his five years of practice, particularly cases of spine dislocation or knee joint replacement.

"The longest operation I've ever done was to remove a tumor from a 5kg dog's intestines. After the ultrasound and X-ray, it took me three hours to surgically remove the tumor and another hour for the dog to awaken from the anesthetic. canines are prone to rabies during the hot weather, which provides a persistent risk to pet care providers, particularly canines under 6 months old that have not been inoculated against rabies and may get sick unexpectedly," Mr. Phien remembered.

According to Mr. Phien, dogs often bite pet care personnel on the hands and face. To avoid harm, dogs brought in for clinical assessment must wear muzzles. If a dog is too aggressive, the owner must use a leash to keep it from biting while the veterinarian examines or treats it, and the doctor must use thick protective gloves while palpating the dog's body.

"Most big breeds, including Rottweilers and German Shepherds, are particularly violent. Even non-aggressive dogs that are routinely injected with medicine may become timid. When I deliver shots, they bite back in defense. In severe cases, we must provide sedatives from a distance before attempting to inspect and treat them", said Mr. Ho Duy Phien, a veterinarian at Quang Dung Pet Clinic.
