This is the second time in the past three years that the United Nations has chosen this theme, reflecting a high level of priority on transitioning to a circular economy, fostering innovation, and promoting international cooperation.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the world produces around 430 million tonnes of plastic each year, more than two-thirds of which is single-use plastic. In Vietnam, an estimated 1.8 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated annually, but only about 27% is recycled. The majority is either landfilled or incinerated, causing severe harm to the environment and public health.
In response to the global call for environmental action, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE) has issued Official Dispatch on organizing activities to mark World Environment Day (June 5) and the Month of Action for the Environment 2025, under the national campaign “Join Hands to Reduce Plastic Waste - Spread a Green Lifestyle.”
Key activities include: organizing rallies and community forums, designating a “No Single-Use Plastic” day, collecting and sorting waste at the source, showcasing recycled products and circular economy models, launching “Plastic-Free” movements in schools, supermarkets, markets, and government offices, and carrying out mass clean-up campaigns, as well as the collection and sorting of plastic waste at the source in urban, rural, and residential areas.
Members of the Women's Union, in coordination with the Youth Union of Dai Kim ward (Hoang Mai district, Hanoi city), launched a community cleanup campaign in the playground and flower garden area. Photo: Hoang Hien.
The MAE also calls on localities to strengthen multimedia communication efforts, innovate the dissemination of environmental protection policies, and support businesses in investing in advanced recycling technologies and the production of environmentally friendly products. Policy communication is considered a key driver to enhance law enforcement, change behaviors, and create tangible improvements in environmental pollution control, particularly in tackling plastic waste pollution.
The core message of this year’s campaign is: “Act Today, Live Green Tomorrow - Reduce Plastic, Protect the Ocean, Secure the Future.” The MAE encourages all agencies tMSo organize practical activities in accordance with local conditions to celebrate World Environment Day and the Month of Action for the Environment 2025. Every individual, organization, and business is called upon to become a “green warrior” for a Vietnam free of plastic waste.
