On the morning of August 19, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Chairman of the University Council at Nam Can Tho University, announced that Professor Vo Tong Xuan passed away at 7:00 a.m. on August 19 after a period of serious illness.
The funeral for Professor Vo Tong Xuan will be held at the Ho Chi Minh City Funeral Home, after which his remains will be taken back to his hometown for burial.
Professor Vo Tong Xuan was the Honorary Rector of Nam Can Tho University. During his tenure, he made significant contributions to the university and to the education sector in the Mekong Delta region.
Professor Vo Tong Xuan was a Hero of Labor, a People's Teacher, and a leading expert who made substantial contributions to Vietnam's agricultural sector.
Born on September 6, 1940, in Ba Chuc town, Tri Ton district, An Giang province, Professor Vo Tong Xuan held many important positions and received numerous major titles and awards both domestically and internationally. These include serving as Vice President of Can Tho University (1982-1997) and President of An Giang University (December 1999 to November 2007). He was also the Honorary President of Nam Can Tho University.
Professor Vo Tong Xuan became the first Vietnamese scientist to win the VinFuture Prize for his work on "Invention and Dissemination of Disease-Resistant Rice Varieties" at the award ceremony held on the evening of December 20, 2023, in Hanoi.
