Hanoi and UNDP sign partnership on green transition and modern economic development

(VAN) The Hanoi People’s Committee and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a memorandum of understanding, reaffirming their commitment to expand cooperation across six areas.

Accordingly, the areas of cooperation include: promoting green transition; responding to climate change; protecting the environment and ensuring effective waste management; advancing the circular, digital, and sharing economies; implementing leadership capacity-building programs and fostering modern governance; promoting public sector innovation with people and businesses at the center, and delivering comprehensive services.

As part of the signing ceremony, Mr. Tran Sy Thanh, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, and Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, received and held talks with Ms. Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific. Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam, also attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Ms. Kanni Wignaraja congratulated Viet Nam on the successful celebration of the 80th National Day of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam held in Hanoi.

She also expressed her delight at witnessing the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between UNDP and the Hanoi People’s Committee, affirming that UNDP stands ready to accompany, support, and collaborate with the capital in all aspects of its development journey, working together to realize long-term cooperation plans.

Agreeing with Ms. Kanni Wignaraja’s remarks, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh thanked UNDP for its support to Hanoi in recent years.

Updating on social welfare efforts across the city, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh affirmed that with the support and partnership of international organizations, including UNDP, the capital has made - and will continue to make - progress in enhancing urban quality toward a greener and smarter city, where people’s livelihoods are increasingly improved.

He further noted that the areas of cooperation outlined in the MoU align closely with the priority tasks set out in Hanoi’s master plan.

Therefore, the forthcoming cooperation between the Hanoi People’s Committee and UNDP, based on the newly signed memorandum of understanding, represents a practical step for the city to advance pilot projects and innovative initiatives in public governance, clean energy, sustainable transport, and disaster risk management. These efforts will help drive green economic development and contribute to improving the quality of life for Hanoi’s citizens.

The Hanoi People’s Committee expressed confidence that the six areas of cooperation agreed upon this time will yield positive outcomes. It also called on UNDP to work closely with the city’s relevant departments to continue discussions and concretize the commitments outlined in the memorandum.
