Fruit and vegetable exports fell by 11% in the first two months

(VAN) The decrease is due to stricter pesticide residue checks in many markets, along with logistics disruptions and high transportation costs.

According to data from the Department of Import-Export (Ministry of Industry and Trade), it is estimated that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export turnover in the first two months of 2025 reached 724 million USD, a decrease of 11% compared to the same period in 2024.

In February 2025, the export value of fruits and vegetables from Vietnam is estimated at 350 million USD, a decrease of 6.5% compared to January 2025, but an increase of 7.6% compared to February 2024.

The decline in fruit and vegetable exports from Vietnam is due to stricter pesticide residue checks in many markets. Additionally, logistics disruptions and high transportation costs have made it difficult for export businesses to fulfill orders on time.

For example, in early 2025, China (the main consumer market for Vietnam’s durian) implemented the Golden O quarantine rule in addition to the previous Cadmium certification. In response, Vietnamese authorities quickly worked with Chinese agencies to resume durian exports. As a result, to export durian to China, shipments must have certification showing no Golden O presence, along with confirmation that cadmium levels are within permissible limits.

Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has announced a list of 9 certified testing laboratories recognized by both Vietnam and China to issue certifications. With these certified laboratories, durian exports have resumed, and the price of durian is expected to rise in the near future.

Additionally, thanks to a stable year-round supply, Vietnam has an advantage in exporting durian compared to other countries. Vietnam's off-season durian will last until the end of March. From mid-April, durian harvest season in the southwestern provinces will begin.
