Vietnamese Trade Counselor Nguyen Duc Thanh in Italia said thanks to the efforts of all relevant sides only around 30 containers of cashew nuts have not been able to verify the origin documents so far with each valued at US$ 200,000.

According to Thanh before Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) sent the official letter dated March 8, 2022 to Vietnam Embassy and Vietnam Trade Office in Italia, informing of a suspected scam related to 100 containers of cashew nuts exported to the European country, the Office had got informed of the case.

After being informed of the suspected scam on March 5, the representative of Vietnam Trade Office in Italia went to Genoa port. At that time, some containers of Vietnamese cashew nuts had just arrived at the port and all the original bills of these containers were verified. The buyer even paid the port fee. The Office immediately worked with COSCO shipping company, asking it to keep these shipments at port as Vietnamese exporters reported a suspected scam related to the containers. COSCO Company agreed to not deliver these containers to the buyer after getting legal advice from lawyers.

Along with that, Vietnam Embassy to Italia promptly sent diplomatic notes to the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and other Italian relevant agencies to report on the suspected scam and at the same time ask for coordinated actions by the counterpart agencies.

After receiving Vinacas' letter about the scam, Vietnam Trade Office in Italia instantly instructed the cashew exporters in Vietnam to stop sending original documents as well as ask DHL Express Service to return the undelivered documents to sender immediately. For the original documents delivered to the suspected scammers, they must report the details including names, addresses of recipients and receiving time to facilitate tracing.

Thanh was confident that there was a good chance of reclaiming the ownership of 30 containers of cashew nuts whose original documents have not been verified yet.
