Breakthrough of marine economy and high tech agriculture in Khanh Hoa

(VAN) The agriculture and environment sector of Khanh Hoa has achieved many accomplishments over the past 80 years, contributing to the goal of making the province a centrally governed city by 2030.

Over recent years, the agriculture and environment sector in Khanh Hoa Province has made significant contributions to socio-economic development, positioning the sector as a key pillar of the provincial economy. Nguyen Duy Quang, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Khanh Hoa Province, affirmed that the accomplishments achieved in the past period are a solid foundation for the province to enter a new stage of development.

From production mindset to agricultural economy

With the action motto "Solidarity, democracy, discipline, responsibility, breakthrough, development", the agriculture and environment sector of Khanh Hoa has achieved many remarkable milestones.

The average annual growth rate of the value of agriculture, forestry and fisheries has consistently maintained 2 - 3% per year. The sector's economic structure has undergone a significant shift, with a strong emphasis on adding value, reducing the share of traditional agriculture, and a rapid increase in aquaculture and rural services. Notably, the agriculture sector has shifted from a production mindset to an agricultural economy mindset, characterized by high-tech applications and sustainable development.

In crop production, the province has established specialized cultivation zones, implemented water-saving irrigation, greenhouses, VietGAP, and organic standards, and developed production, processing, and consumption link chains.

Khanh Hoa has supported the issuance of 170 planting area codes (over 5,209 ha), including 68 codes serving exports to the United States, New Zealand, Australia, China, and the EU. The livestock sector has also undergone positive transformation toward farm-scale development, high-tech applications, and safe livestock practices.

The marine economy is one of the province's remarkable highlights. Total seafood output has continued to increase, estimated at 276,000 tons in 2025. The seafood export turnover of Khanh Hoa in 2024 reached over USD 845.9 million, ranking it among the top five provinces nationwide. In particular, aquaculture continues to advance toward modernity and sustainability, with many high-tech marine farming models using HDPE and FRP cages.

Decision No. 231/QD-TTg dated January 24, 2025, of the Prime Minister approving the pilot project for the development of high-tech marine aquaculture is a historic milestone, creating a strong driving force for the province to form concentrated industrial marine farming areas.

Alongside this, natural resource and environmental management have been emphasized. The provincial forest coverage is maintained at 47%. Many major irrigation projects have been invested in, thereby improving water supply capacity. The proportion of rural households with access to standard clean water has reached 86.7%. Environmental work has also achieved precise results, with stable environmental quality and no facilities causing severe pollution. The collection rate of urban waste has reached 99.5%, rural areas over 85%, and all industrial zones have standard wastewater treatment systems.

Two major emulation movements have brought a new appearance to rural areas of Khanh Hoa. To date, the province has 28 out of 48 communes meeting new rural standards and 4 communes meeting advanced new rural standards. Notably, the movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses" has become a provincial highlight, having completed 100% of the set targets by eliminating 3,509 temporary or dilapidated houses, one month ahead of the provincial schedule and five months ahead of the Government's schedule.

The Party and the State have recognized these achievements, notably the Prime Minister awarding the "Government’s Emulation Flag" to collectives with outstanding achievements in the movement "The whole country joins efforts to build new rural areas" for the period 2021 - 2025.

Bringing Khanh Hoa to become a centrally governed city

These achievements provide a solid foundation for Khanh Hoa Province to enter a new stage of development, with the strategic goal of becoming a centrally governed city by 2030, in line with the spirit of Resolution 09 of the Politburo.

To achieve this goal, the agriculture and environment sector of Khanh Hoa Province identifies its key role, shifting from agricultural production to a farming economy that is associated with services, tourism, and considers the environment a vital factor for sustainable development.

During the 2026-2030 period, the agriculture and environment sector in Khanh Hoa focuses on four core tasks. First, developing agriculture in depth and promoting high-tech agriculture. The goal is to increase the production value on cultivated land to VND 180 million per hectare and VND 1 billion per hectare for high-tech agriculture.

Second, making the marine economy a breakthrough and concentrating resources on developing high-tech marine aquaculture associated with ecosystem protection, turning Khanh Hoa into a national center for aquatic seed and marine farming industries.

Third, protecting the environment is the top priority. The sector commits to maintaining and improving environmental indicators, aiming to achieve forest coverage of over 47% by 2030 and to ensure that 99.6% of household solid waste and hazardous waste are collected and treated. This will ensure a green, clean, beautiful environment for an international tourism city.

Fourth, continuing to promote digital transformation in land, water resource, and mineral management to ensure transparency and provide better services for people and businesses.

The agriculture and environment sector of Khanh Hoa Province believes that under the leadership of the Party and the State, the sector will continue to achieve greater successes. The province will remain an active, proactive, and creative component contributing to the successful implementation of the sector's general goals.
