Belgium to become the second largest market for Vietnamese coffee

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), information from the General Department of Customs shows that Vietnam's coffee exports to Belgium in March 2022 reached 29.2 thousand tons, equivalent to 61.7 million USD, up by 440.7% in volume and 571% in value compared to March 2021.

In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam's coffee exports to Belgium reached 65.7 thousand tons, equivalent to 135.3 million USD, up 446.8% in volume and 580% in value over the same period last year. 2021.

With the above results, Belgium is currently ranked as the second largest coffee export market of Vietnam, accounting for 11.3% of the total volume and 10.4% of the total value in the first quarter (in 2021, Belgium is the 7th largest market in terms of volume and 9th in export value of Vietnamese coffee).

Belgium is Europe's third largest importer of green coffee. Over 96% of Belgium's coffee imports originate directly from coffee-producing countries, supplying more than 70 countries and territories.

Belgium is the largest re-exporter of green coffee in Europe. Belgium mainly re-exports to neighboring countries: The Netherlands accounted for 55% of Belgium's re-exports of green coffee in 2020. Large-scale and specialized Dutch coffee importers often use Belgium to conduct their activities. Other re-export markets of Belgium are France (25%) and Germany (4.1%).

Belgium is also an important center of coffee trade in Europe. A large portion of the coffee traded in the world arrives at the port of Antwerp, where it is used for transshipment purposes. This is the largest coffee storage in the world, allowing to store over 250 thousand tons of coffee. The port of Antwerp accounts for about 50% of Europe's coffee logistics business.

Meanwhile, the port of Zeebrugge is another important entry point for coffee in Belgium. The port provides a modern temperature controlled storage facility and a green coffee distribution facility connected to the rest of Europe by rail, road and sea.

In early 2021, the two ports mentioned above were merged, which further strengthened Belgium's position as an important center of coffee trade in Europe.
