Australia imports less China’s wooden furniture and more from Vietnam

(VAN) Australia's import of Chinese wooden furniture fell sharply in the first month of this year, while the purchase of Vietnam’s furniture increased.

According to International Trade Centre (ITC), in January 2022, Australia sharply decreased its imports of wooden furniture from China, the largest wooden furniture supplier market.

Specifically, China’s wooden furniture imported into Australia reached $101.3 million, down 19.8% compared to December 2021, down 12.1% compared to January 2021. China import’s proportion accounted for 66.9%, down 2.9 percentage points compared to the same period in 2021.

While reducing imports from China, Australia increased imports from Vietnam, the second-largest supplier of wooden furniture, in January 2022, import from Vietnam reached $19.2 million, up 16.8% compared to December 2021, up 0.1% compared to January 2021.

Vietnam import’s proportion accounted for 12.7% of Australia's total wooden furniture import, up 1.1 percentage points over the same period in 2021.

Australia is one of the 10 largest markets for Vietnam's wood industry. In 2021, the export value of wood and wood products to Australia reached $169 million.
