Announcement of the end of A/H9N2 avian influenza outbreak in humans

(VAN) As of April 9, twenty-four days after the patient was placed in isolation and received treatment for avian influenza at the hospital, fifteen of the patient's close contacts exhibited stable health condition.

On April 10, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention under Tien Giang province's Department of Health announced the end of the A/H9N2 avian influenza outbreak among humans in Tan Quoi hamlet, Tan Ly Dong commune, Chau Thanh district. This disease outbreak marks the first sighting of the A/H9N2 avian influenza in Vietnam. Accordingly, the virus was discovered by Ho Chi Minh City Tropical Disease Hospital during the treatment of 37-year-old Nguyen Van D from Tan Quoi hamlet, Tan Ly Dong commune.

After receiving information from the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh city regarding the A/H9N2 avian influenza patient, the healthcare and veterinary sectors of Tien Giang province has cooperated with local governments to verify, conduct epidemiological investigations, and actively implement disease prevention and control measures in accordance with regulations.

Subsequently, the province compiled a list of fourteen adults and one child who had close contact with the patient; and their health was monitored daily. As of April 9, twenty-four days after the patient was placed in isolation and received treatment for avian influenza at the hospital, fifteen of the patient's close contacts exhibited stable health condition.

According to the Ministry of Health, after disease control and prevention measures are implemented, the outbreak can be declared to have ended if no new cases of suspected transmission are discovered within fourteen days from the last contact for adults and twenty-one days for children under 15 years old

The 37-year-old patient Nguyen Van D from Tan Quoi hamlet, Tan Ly Dong commune, Chau Thanh district is still undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit at the Tropical Disease Hospital of Ho Chi Minh City. The patient is currently on mechanical ventilation, and undergoing screening for hospital-acquired pneumonia.
