Vietnamese strawberries, a million-dollar export product

In the dynamic growth landscape of Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable industry, strawberries are unexpectedly emerging as a “new phenomenon,” marked by a rare pace of export growth. Customs data show a remarkable leap: from only about $ 6,000 in 2021, strawberry export turnover reached $ 1.74 million in 2025. Notably, in just the first two months of this year, export value already hit $ 3.4 million, far exceeding the whole of last year, with growth reaching thousands of times. Although the share remains modest, this is still the highest growth rate within the fruit and vegetable group.

This growth momentum reflects a clear shift among businesses from volume-driven products to high-quality agricultural goods with greater economic value. Unlike durian, bananas, or dragon fruit, strawberries require strict standards in varieties, cultivation processes, and especially post-harvest preservation.

Currently, Vietnamese strawberries have penetrated multiple markets such as Japan, South Korea, the EU, and the Middle East. However, most exported products are still in processed forms, such as frozen, dried, or used as raw materials, while fresh strawberries, the higher-value segment, remain limited due to logistics barriers and cold chain constraints.

Domestically, strawberry cultivation areas are expanding rapidly, with Son La emerging as a new production hub alongside Lam Dong, the traditional “capital.” The application of high technology, from greenhouses to drip irrigation, is helping improve productivity and quality, creating a foundation for exports.

Despite strong prospects, market access and storage infrastructure remain key challenges. However, with competitive costs and steadily improving quality, Vietnamese strawberries are expected to gradually penetrate the mid-range segment in international markets, creating additional momentum for agricultural export growth in the coming period.
