Viet Nam supports Sri Lanka with fertilizer and machinery

On April 28, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung received and worked with the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Viet Nam, Mr. Poshitha Perera.

Deputy Minister Hoang Trung affirmed that agricultural cooperation between Viet Nam and Sri Lanka has been implemented through a number of concrete programs, with notable progress in fisheries, livestock, and veterinary fields. The two countries have also signed several cooperation documents and achieved initial encouraging results.

“Although bilateral trade turnover in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries remains modest, there is still significant room for expansion in the coming period,” the Deputy Minister emphasized.

Leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment expressed their desire to coordinate with the Embassy of Sri Lanka to agree on implementation approaches for agricultural cooperation areas that Sri Lanka is interested in.

Specifically, the Deputy Minister proposed that Sri Lanka provide details on the types of agricultural machinery planned for pilot support in the country, as well as the receiving entities, so that both sides can effectively carry out implementation. Regarding the proposal for fertilizer support, Sri Lanka needs to clarify its actual demand to facilitate connections with relevant enterprises.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Poshitha Perera expressed his appreciation to Deputy Minister Hoang Trung and the specialized agencies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment for receiving the delegation. He also commended the increasingly strengthened cooperation between the two countries in the agricultural sector.

According to the Ambassador, Viet Nam - Sri Lanka agricultural cooperation has recently seen significant progress, particularly in fisheries, with a number of agreements signed. When Sri Lanka has faced difficulties in agricultural production, Viet Nam has consistently been ready to provide support, share information, and offer valuable experience.

Praising the quality and output of Viet Nam’s fertilizers, the Ambassador expressed his hope that both sides would promote long-term cooperation in this area. He also noted his impression of Viet Nam’s capacity to operate agricultural technology systems, especially the model of seasonal crop specialization.

The Ambassador emphasized that the timely and close support from the Ministry has helped Sri Lanka gain additional experience and knowledge in agricultural development. In particular, fertilizers and technology transfer are considered key pillars. In the long term, this cooperation not only supports production but also brings clear commercial benefits.

Ambassador Poshitha Perera noted that the Mekong Delta region shares many similarities in climate and soil conditions with Sri Lanka, meaning that Viet Nam’s agricultural machinery and technologies could be well suited for transfer and application there.

Viet Nam stands ready to expand cooperation in science and technology in the fields of crop production and livestock farming. Deputy Minister Hoang Trung expressed his impression of Sri Lanka’s tea industry, where many renowned, high-quality tea varieties are produced, and suggested that this is an area where both sides can further enhance the exchange of experience.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to strengthen information exchange, promote business connections, and concretize cooperation initiatives, aiming to improve the effectiveness of Viet Nam - Sri Lanka agricultural cooperation in the coming period.
