VAAS, IRD partners in climate-resilient agricultural research

On June 12, the Viet Nam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS) and the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) signed a scientific and technological cooperation agreement, marking a new phase of collaboration aimed at advancing research, innovation and sustainable agricultural development amid growing climate challenges.

The signing ceremony was attended by leaders and scientists from both institutions. The event was also witnessed by French Ambassador to Viet Nam Olivier Brochet and Dr François Roger, Regional Director for Southeast Asia of the French Agricultural Research Center for International Development (CIRAD).

At the ceremony, both sides highlighted the achievements of their previous cooperation, particularly in joint research projects, training activities and capacity-building programmes for scientific staff. These accomplishments were regarded as a solid foundation for expanding collaboration in the years ahead.

Under the newly signed agreement, VAAS and IRD will cooperate in a range of priority research areas, including soil health, biodiversity and plant genetic resource conservation, biotechnology, beneficial microorganisms, crop pest management, smart agriculture and circular agriculture. The partnership will also focus on greenhouse gas emission reduction, the development of green agricultural ecosystems, climate adaptation solutions and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in agricultural production.

In addition to research activities, the two organizations will strengthen expert exchanges, implement high-quality human resource training programs and jointly mobilize domestic and international funding to support research and technology transfer.

Speaking at the event, French Ambassador to Viet Nam Olivier Brochet emphasized the importance of scientific cooperation in addressing global challenges. He also acknowledged the valuable contributions of VAAS and French research partners, including IRD and CIRAD, in promoting agricultural development and sustainability.

The agreement is expected to provide fresh momentum for applied research activities and contribute to the transition towards greener, more sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture in Viet Nam.
