Tech solutions driving low-emission agriculture

Strategic directions and sustainable development pillars

On June 4, the Viet Nam Green Transition Association (VGA) coordinated with Hanoi High-Tech Vocational College to organize an in-depth workshop on green agriculture and carbon credits. The event attracted many experts, regulatory agency representatives and businesses to discuss sustainable development models for the agricultural sector.

According to Dr. Phung Duc Tien, former Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Viet Nam's agriculture brings great export value but is facing many strict technical barriers. He proposed five key solution groups: raising awareness of the green transition, promoting the responsibility of leaders, boosting the ecological economy, enhancing the application of science and technology and implementing climate change adaptation tasks to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

Agreeing with the above direction, Mr. Dang Huy Dong, Chairman of the Viet Nam Green Transition Association, shaped three basic pillars. The first pillar is science and technology. The second is developing large-scale production and building concentrated raw material zones to optimize costs. The third is the companionship of state agencies through the issuance of standards, technical regulations and certification systems to support business development.

Delving into international standards, Master Pham Hoai Trung, Vice Chairman of the Viet Nam Green Transition Association, analyzed the changes in global trade. According to Master Pham Hoai Trung, the market is shifting toward added value, transparency and sustainability. He stated that traceability is only the beginning. Businesses are compelled to integrate environmental, social and governance criteria to meet strict international regulations.

Applying closed-loop technology and digitalization in practice

From a business perspective, Mr. Nguyen Van Luu, General Director of Dong Tam CNC Agricultural Technology Joint Stock Company, stated that the unit is thoroughly applying biotechnology to process by-products into organic fertilizer. Farming is integrated with drones and blockchain data storage platforms to establish electronic logs. These technologies help reduce chemical fertilizers by 30%, irrigation water by 20%, and cut up to 2.2 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per hectare annually, generating source data for carbon credits. The unit also invests in sublimation drying technology and rooftop solar power to close the emission reduction loop.

A highlight in the event organization was the thorough application of sustainability criteria in practice. According to information from the organizing committee, all workshop documents were digitized. Attendees did not use paper documents but scanned barcodes integrated into artistic paintings crafted from eco-friendly materials. This action both optimized resources and conveyed the message of combining digital transformation and the green transition.

Promoting cooperative linkages and shaping a green future

During the program, the workshop featured cooperative signing activities. Witnessed by Dr. Pham Xuan Khanh, Rector of Hanoi High-Tech Vocational College, a multilateral memorandum of understanding was signed. Hanoi High-Tech Vocational College signed with BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company and Agri Dong Tam Joint Stock Company to coordinate in human resource training. A representative of Agri Dong Tam Joint Stock Company also signed a cooperation agreement with Yen Bai Agriculture and Forestry Product Processing and Trading Cooperative. According to the business, the cooperative's guava leaf tea product has been approved by a Russian partner and is preparing for the export of its first batch.

The workshop did not stop at identifying challenges but also mapped out a clear implementation roadmap for the entire industry. According to experts at the event, the synchronous combination of state support policies, the innovative efforts of enterprises, and the human resource training role of vocational schools is the vital key. The transition toward low-emission agriculture, applying environmental, social, and governance standards along with carbon credit measurement mechanisms, is no longer an option but an inevitable requirement. This is the solid foundation for Viet Nam's agriculture to enhance its competitiveness, integrate deeply and develop sustainably.
