Phu Quoc becomes a ‘special zone’ to unlock sea and islands potential

(VAN) As of July 1, 2025, Phu Quoc has officially become a special administrative zone under the newly established An Giang province. This signifies a significant stage in exploiting the island's maritime capabilities.

The Phu Quoc Special Zone covers 589 square kilometres, including the complete natural area and population of the wards Duong Dong and An Thoi, as well as six communes: Duong To, Ham Ninh, Cua Duong, Bai Thom, Ganh Dau, and Cua Can, which were once part of Phu Quoc City.

On July 2, the Phu Quoc Special Zone People’s Council passed a decision to reassign the names of 29 hamlets in the communes of Duong To, Ham Ninh, Ganh Dau, Cua Duong, Cua Can, and Bai Thom to 29 neighborhoods within the special zone's jurisdiction. Phu Quoc has been provided with a unique governance framework, enabling significant independence in investment, finance, administration, and land management, hence facilitating expedited capital acquisition and the execution of large-scale projects.

Phu Quoc is concentrating its growth on essential maritime sectors, including tourism, maritime logistics, aquaculture and seafood processing, advanced technology, and renewable energy. The island's modern infrastructure, comprising an international airport, deep-sea port, and inter-regional transit network, establishes it as a crucial trade hub in Southeast Asia.

Beyond economic goals, the special zone authority is committed to sustainable development by preserving the 26,000-hectare marine protected area. This region hosts unique ecosystems, including coral reefs and seagrass meadows, as well as endangered animals such as dugongs and sea turtles. Phu Quoc is advancing towards sustainable tourism and eco-resorts that integrate opulent pleasures with environmental and cultural conservation.

Phu Quoc has been designated to host the 2027 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, an event anticipated to significantly enhance infrastructure development, service quality, and the island's global reputation. This presents a perfect chance to enhance Phu Quoc's worldwide image and cultivate stronger ties with the international economic community.
