Earlier this year, the Quang Tri Provincial Agricultural Extension Center launched a pilot project to convert low-productivity agricultural land to lotus cultivation, aiming to improve land-use efficiency and enhance climate resilience. The project is being implemented in Le Thuy, Quang Ninh, and Vinh Hoang communes, covering a total area of more than 11 hectares.

To date, lotus plants in Le Thuy and Quang Ninh communes have grown well, with some plots already producing their first blooms. In Vinh Hoang Commune, planting has been completed on schedule.
The converted fields consist of low-productivity farmland with a 20-40 cm cultivation layer. Field embankments have been reinforced to enable effective water management and maintain appropriate water levels throughout each growth stage of the lotus crop.
The project uses a high-yield pink lotus variety specifically cultivated for seed production, which offers strong economic value. Estimated yields are 2.5-3 tons of seeds per hectare, with more than 80% of production secured through contract farming arrangements. Each hectare of lotus is expected to generate VND 100-150 million in income.
The pilot project will serve as the foundation for the Quang Tri Provincial Agricultural Extension Center to expand lotus cultivation across the province.
