HCMC pioneers, developing high-tech agriculture

(VAN) Over the past 20 years, high-tech agriculture has made significant contributions to increasing agricultural production value in Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh City is the country's leading locality in developing high-tech agriculture. In 2004, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a decision establishing the Ho Chi Minh City Agricultural Hi-Tech Park (AHTP). By 2010, AHTP officially began operations on an area of 88.17 hectares in Nhuan Duc Commune, Ho Chi Minh City. This is the first agricultural hi-tech park in the country.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien, Deputy Head of the Management Board of the Agricultural Hi-Tech Park of Ho Chi Minh City, stated that after more than 20 years of operation, AHTP has fulfilled its role in research, leadership, dissemination, technology demonstration, high-tech agricultural enterprise incubation, and vocational training...

Regarding scientific research, over the past 20 years, AHTP has focused on executing more than 500 scientific research tasks ranging from departmental to institutional levels. Among them, over 70% of topics were applied directly to production.

AHTP has formulated over 150 technical protocols (including 16 national-level technical advances) to transfer to farmers and cooperatives across Ho Chi Minh City as well as provinces in the Southeast, Southwest, and nation at large. Protocols transferred by AHTP have helped farmers and cooperatives enhance production efficiency, quality, and agricultural product value.

Concurrently, AHTP annually organizes hundreds of training classes and vocational training programs for rural youth, farmers, and cooperatives in Ho Chi Minh City and various Southern provinces and cities.

In addition, AHTP regularly coordinates with partners to organize career-orientation study trips for pupils and students. Over past years, AHTP has welcomed approximately 50,000 pupils and students annually to visit and learn about the high-tech agriculture sector.

Over the past 20 years, high-tech agriculture has contributed significantly to elevating agricultural production value in Ho Chi Minh City, helping place HCMC at the forefront nationwide in production value per agricultural land area. In 2024, the City's production value on agricultural land reached an average of 619 million VND/ha.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hien shared that applying high technology, including IoT (Internet of Things) sensor technology, helps automate many stages in the production process, thereby boosting labor productivity.

Using environmental sensor technologies makes operating production processes more accurate and efficient. High technology helps save water, fertilizers, and crop protection chemicals..., thereby reducing input costs.

High-tech applications help agricultural production greatly reduce dependency on adverse weather, environmental, and natural condition factors...

By seamlessly integrating high-tech applications into modern agricultural operations, farms can dramatically minimize their vulnerability to adverse weather patterns, unpredictable climate conditions, and fluctuating environmental factors that traditionally threaten crop yields. Beyond building resilience against natural hazards, the optimization of production processes through precise, tech-driven practices acts as a powerful catalyst for productivity, driving crop yields up by 1.2 to 1.5 times - and in many specialized instances, even doubling output compared to conventional farming methods. Furthermore, this technological transformation ensures a remarkably high level of consistency in both product quality and physical appearance, effectively enhancing marketability, commanding higher market value, and significantly boosting overall economic efficiency for agricultural enterprises.

The Ho Chi Minh City Agricultural Hi-Tech Park (AHTP) is Vietnam's first advanced agricultural model; located in Cu Chi District, it has been in operation since 2010. The park focuses on the research, testing, and conservation of high-yield crop and livestock varieties, while pioneering the application of modern technologies such as IoT, automation, and biotechnology. Beyond its technical activities, AHTP plays a pivotal role in pilot production, technology transfer to farmers, and the incubation of thriving startups. Through this comprehensive range of activities, the center not only cultivates a high-quality workforce but also strongly drives the modernization and sustainable development of the regional agricultural sector.

Notably, AHTP is accelerating its development in 2026 by implementing a plan to expand into seven new high-tech agricultural zones, covering over 1,700 hectares across outlying districts with a strong emphasis on aquatic breeds, edible and medicinal mushrooms, and the processing industry.
