Gia Lai accelerates campaign to issue production unit codes

From raw material areas to export markets

To improve the quality of raw material areas, meet traceability requirements, and expand markets, localities in western Gia Lai Province are stepping up training, outreach, and guidance for farmers and cooperatives on procedures for obtaining production unit codes. Durian and coffee are among the priority commodities, as local authorities seek to gradually standardize production area data, improve agricultural product transparency, and build a stronger foundation for exports.

In recent years, the Ia Mo Nong Agricultural Production, Trade, Services and Tourism Cooperative in Ia Ly Commune has consistently prioritized developing standardized raw material areas to serve export markets. The cooperative has established three production unit codes covering a total of 124 hectares of durian farms operated by its participating members.

Le Van Thanh, Director of the Ia Mo Nong Agricultural Production, Trade, Services and Tourism Cooperative, said that for agricultural products to reach distant markets, raw material areas must first be systematically organized from the production stage. The cooperative brings members together, provides guidance on technical processes, requires production logs, and closely monitors cultivation and harvesting.

Through this approach, the cooperative is gradually moving from fragmented production toward organized, controlled raw material areas, strengthening links among farmers, cooperatives, and businesses throughout the agricultural value chain.

In Bo Ngoong Commune, local authorities are reviewing applications and guiding farmers in completing the procedures for obtaining production unit codes. Recently, the Bo Ngoong Commune People's Committee, in coordination with the Department of Agriculture and Environment, held a dialogue with 50 high-performing farmers to directly address difficulties and obstacles in registering for production unit codes and packing facility codes.

Nguyen Van Thuong, Vice Chairman of the Bo Ngoong Commune People's Committee, said the locality will launch a 90-day campaign starting September 15 to accelerate the issuance of production unit codes for durian and coffee. During the first 30 days, the commune aims to complete production unit codes covering 70 hectares of durian, while approximately 700 hectares of coffee are expected to be completed within 90 days.

Accelerating the process without chasing numbers

Recently, the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee issued a document urging relevant agencies and localities to speed up the issuance of production unit codes and packing facility codes to improve traceability and meet export market requirements.

According to the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, as of August 20, 2026, the province had 436 production areas with issued or approved codes, covering 13,174 hectares. However, this result remains below the target, with implementation progressing slowly.

To address the situation, the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee has tasked the Department of Agriculture and Environment with taking the lead and coordinating with relevant departments, agencies, and localities to effectively implement Plan No. 331/KH-UBND dated August 20, 2026, on a campaign to provide guidance and promote implementation of Resolution No. 36/2026/NQ-CP. The province will also review and standardize data on durian and coffee production areas, link this work with the issuance of production unit codes, and connect the data to the agricultural product traceability system.

For commune- and ward-level People's Committees, the province has requested that resources be urgently allocated to receive and promptly process applications for production unit codes and packing facility codes in accordance with regulations. Code issuance must follow the required procedures and conditions, without chasing numbers or lowering standards simply to increase the number of codes issued.

Tran Xuan Khai of the Gia Lai Sub-Department of Plant Production and Protection said accelerating the issuance of production unit and packing facility codes is an urgent requirement as markets increasingly demand traceability. However, according to Khai, the number of codes issued is meaningful only when production areas and packing facilities fully meet the requirements and strictly maintain those standards throughout the production and business process.

Khai also noted that accelerating the issuance of production unit codes is not simply about expanding the coded acreage. It must be accompanied by corresponding packing facilities and stronger management capacity. When raw material areas are closely controlled, packing facilities are standardized, and data are continuously updated and connected, production unit codes can truly become a “ticket” enabling Gia Lai's agricultural products to gain deeper access to demanding international markets.
