Dong Thap: Agricultural restructuring contributes to 1.36 times income increase

Huynh MinhTuan, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Dong Thap province said the project on agricultural restructuring in the 2016-2021 period has created positive changes in many fields, especially agriculture. More specifically,Dong Thap’s agricultural sector sustained its growth rate at 3.6% per year during this period and average income per capita in rural areas reached VND39.42 million, an increase of 1.36 times compared to 2015.

The structure of agricultural production has moved in the direction of linking up with market demand, boosting the development of agriculture and rural areas and agricultural labor mobility between farm and non-farm sectors. Dong Thap will continue to implement the project on agricultural restructuring in the 2021-2025 period with a vision to 2030 , focusing on six key products including lotus and agricultural digital transformation.

The goals are average growth of 3.5% per year by 2025 and VND22.883 billion of added value created by agricultural sector. In addition, the percentage of agricultural labor will reduce to around 40% and agricultural skilled labour will account for 20%; Average income per capital in rural areas will increase by 1.6 times compared to 2020.

According to Tuan, the province always attached importance to speeding up the progress of issuing planting area codes, especially for mango planting areas. In the future, the province will continue to invest in livestock and crop research projects and support the development of commercial beef cattle and mushroom production. Apart from that, the province will have strategies for an in-depth development of the restructured industries. Finally, the focus will be forming raw material growing areas and investing in infrastructures and agricultural processing facilities.
