Dak Lak moves toward ‘greener’ agriculture and the environment

(VAN) Dak Lak’s agriculture and environment sector is implementing a green growth action plan to 2030, promoting ecological, organic, circular, and low-emission development.

Dak Lak province is one of Viet Nam’s localities with ample advantages in agricultural production. As climate change becomes increasingly complex, transitioning to a “green” growth model has become a strategic direction for the province, helping enhance production value, protect natural resources, and improve environmental quality.

Orientation toward green production

According to the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province’s overall goal is to build a modern, environmentally friendly agricultural sector, strengthen competitiveness, and ensure sustainable development. In this process, “greening” production is identified as a key task, associated with transforming the growth model toward efficient resource use while minimizing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Dak Lak aims to strongly develop high-tech agriculture, ecological agriculture, and circular agriculture. Clean and organic production models will be encouraged and expanded, while science and technology, particularly biotechnology, will be further applied to increase productivity, improve product quality, and enhance climate resilience.

In terms of crop production, the province focuses on restructuring crops in line with natural conditions, using high-quality varieties that are pest-resistant and water-efficient. Solutions such as water-saving irrigation, proper nutrient management, and reduced use of chemical fertilizers are being promoted to lower emissions and protect the environment.

As for livestock production, development is oriented toward concentrated farming, biosafety, and high-tech application combined with effective waste treatment. Biogas systems, biological bedding, and the recycling of livestock by-products are encouraged for widespread adoption, helping reduce pollution while making use of production inputs.

When it comes to fisheries, Dak Lak aims to develop circular aquaculture models that save water and minimize waste discharged into the environment. Management of fishing activities will also be strengthened to protect aquatic resources and ensure compliance with regulations against illegal fishing.

To promote a circular economy in agriculture, by-products such as straw, livestock waste, and fisheries residues will be recycled into organic fertilizers, animal feed, or bio-based materials. This approach not only reduces pollution but also increases production value and builds sustainable agricultural linkages.

At the same time, the province has set the goal to maintain forest coverage at 42% or higher, increasing the carbon absorption and storing capacity, contributing to greenhouse gas reduction and ecosystem protection. The efficient management and use of land and water resources are also integrated into socio-economic development planning, with the goal of ensuring irrigation for more than 86% of crop areas requiring water.

Implementing solutions in a coordinated manner

Aiming to achieve the goal of “greening” production, the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Environment has identified the need for synchronized solutions, from policy improvements to raising awareness and strengthening implementation.

First, communication efforts will be intensified to raise awareness among people and businesses about green growth. Through communication campaigns and policy dialogues, effective production models will be introduced and replicated, creating broader influence within the community.

This province focuses on investing in infrastructure that supports sustainable agricultural production, particularly modern irrigation systems to ensure efficient water supply and use. Disaster prevention facilities are also being upgraded to improve resilience against climate change.

Environmental management is being strengthened through stricter control of waste, as well as air, soil, and water quality. According to the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province is moving toward an integrated waste management model, treating waste as a resource for reuse and recycling, thereby reducing the volume sent to landfills. By 2030, the urban solid waste collection rate is expected to reach 98%, while the proportion of direct landfill disposal will drop to aproximately 10%.

In addition, green growth targets are being integrated into socio-economic development plans to ensure harmony between economic growth and environmental protection. Policies encouraging investment in green agriculture, waste treatment, and energy efficiency are also being studied and issued to attract social resources.

The role of specialized agencies is also emphasized in guiding, inspecting, monitoring, and providing technical support to people and businesses. Pilot models of ecological, circular, and low-emission agriculture will be established and replicated, creating a foundation for the comprehensive transformation of Dak Lak’s agriculture and environment sector.
