Global coffee prices extended their upward momentum. Arabica reached a two-week high, while robusta climbed to its highest level in five weeks.
Arabica futures on ICE rose sharply on Tuesday as investors covered short positions amid concerns over Brazil’s harvest progress, the possible emergence of El Niño, and low certified inventory levels.
Leonardo Rossetti, coffee market analyst at StoneX, said speculators who shifted from net long to net short positions last week may have covered part of those shorts due to concerns about harvest delays in Brazil.
Several consecutive days of rain soaked harvested coffee being dried on patios in Brazil’s key producing regions. Heavy rainfall also halted field harvesting in the world’s largest coffee producer and exporter.
Excessive humidity is considered unusual for this time of year in Brazil and may be an early impact of the El Niño climate pattern. This could increase the risk of bacterial or fungal diseases, affecting crop health in the coming period.
Coffee prices on June 17, 2026: Upward momentum continues
Coffee inventories on ICE have been trending lower over the past three months, supporting prices.
Specifically, ICE-certified arabica inventories fell to 396,957 bags as of June 16, the lowest level in 6.75 months.
Meanwhile, ICE-certified robusta inventories dropped to a two-year low of 3,631 lots on May 15. However, they have since risen to 3,991 lots, the highest level in about 2.25 months.
According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), global coffee exports in the first seven months of the 2025-2026 crop year, from October 2025 to April 2026, reached around 4.94 million tons, almost unchanged from the same period of the previous crop year.
However, the export structure changed significantly. Arabica exports fell 6.2% to 2.84 million tons, while robusta exports increased 9.9% to more than 2.09 million tons.
Vietnam continued to play an important role in the growth of global robusta exports. Meanwhile, Indonesia, where robusta accounts for about 90% of production, recorded a sharp decline in exports during the same period.
