Can Tho pushes for 50% farm, co-op digitalization by 2030

(VAN) The Can Tho City People's Committee has issued the Digital Economy Development Plan for the 2026-2030 period, in which agriculture and the environment are among the key sectors prioritized for accelerated digital transformation.

According to the plan, Can Tho City aims for the digital economy to account for at least 20% of the agriculture and environment sector by 2030. At the same time, at least 50% of farms and agricultural cooperatives are expected to use digital platforms for management and operations. This is a significant challenge, requiring coordinated efforts from authorities at all levels, sectors, and the public.

Currently, Can Tho has 1,110 livestock farms raising cattle and poultry; 286 farms engaged in crop production, livestock, and aquaculture; 642 agricultural cooperatives and 5 cooperative unions.

To achieve these targets, the Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Environment will develop a smart agriculture ecosystem, gradually shifting from traditional agricultural production to a digital agricultural economy. The city will prioritize supporting the listing of agricultural products on e-commerce platforms to expand market access.

In parallel, technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and big data will be increasingly applied in management, production, and market demand analysis, helping optimize processes and enhance the value of agricultural products.

The city is also focusing on implementing solutions for traceability, while developing an agricultural data platform that includes data on land, weather, crops, and more, with the aim of connecting and integrating with the national data system to effectively support production and market forecasting.

One of the key tasks at present is to popularize digital skills among farmers through grassroots communication systems and the Farmers’ Association. This will help raise awareness and support farmers in gradually accessing and participating in the digital transformation of agricultural production.

In addition, the city will promote the development of a green and circular economy, encourage the use of renewable energy, and move toward low-carbon, environmentally friendly agricultural production models.

In terms of infrastructure, Can Tho prioritizes building a digital data platform for the agriculture and environment sectors, particularly land data and digital mapping, ensuring data sharing and accessibility, and laying the groundwork for new services and business models in this field.

The development of data resources and a skilled data workforce is also being emphasized, especially in agriculture and environmental sectors.

The Can Tho Department of Agriculture and Environment will coordinate with relevant departments, sectors, and localities to accelerate the development of digital agriculture. At the same time, it will study and advise on policies to promote the digital economy in agriculture, aiming for comprehensive digital transformation from production and processing to the consumption of agricultural products.

In recent years, to accelerate digital transformation in the sector, the city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment has collected GPS-based data on 546 agricultural, forestry, and fishery production and business establishments across the area. It has also issued electronic traceability codes to 321 producers and businesses, covering 621 products.

In addition, the Department has deployed a range of specialized software tools to farmers, including: VNPT Green for managing planting areas and maintaining electronic farming logs; Mobi Agri for pest identification and technical advisory; Ricemore for rice production management; land database systems; smart insect monitoring systems; and EnviSoft for automated environmental monitoring data management. At the same time, the Department has implemented a monitoring system for sand resource extraction, contributing to stricter management and more efficient use of this resource.
