26 new caves discovered in Phong Nha-Ke Bang, boosting tourism potential

The Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, in coordination with the Quang Tri Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, held a conference to announce new cave discoveries in the heritage area.

According to survey results, the expedition recorded 29 caves, including 26 newly discovered caves and extensions of three previously known ones, with a total surveyed length of over 13,600 meters. This is regarded as a significant finding, further affirming Phong Nha - Ke Bang’s status as the “kingdom of caves” of Viet Nam and the world.

The survey was conducted from March 21 to April 11, 2026, with the participation of 10 British cave experts, along with guides, porters, and local residents. The survey area covered multiple locations within the national park and surrounding areas, including Phong Nha, Thuong Trach, Kim Phu, Kim Dien, Tan Thanh, Tuyen Lam, and Truong Son.

Among the newly discovered caves, Thien Cung Cave, at 4,206 meters, is the longest identified during this expedition and is considered to have high scientific value and tourism potential. Other notable caves include Nuoc Lan Cave (2,721 meters), Ma Dơm Cave (1,257 meters), and Cha Ngheo Cave (583 meters).

The findings indicate that the cave system in Phong Nha - Ke Bang continues to develop strongly within karst terrain, featuring both deep vertical caves and large horizontal systems, further highlighting the area’s outstanding geological and geomorphological values.
